I am an experienced teacher, accomplished, friendly, lively and enthusiastic. I love teaching Reading/Language Arts to students of all ages and to help students improve study and organizational skills. I believe learning should be structured yet I know the importance of engendering creative thinking in my students. I also teach piano to students of all ages and levels. I have a unique background that combines expertise in both music (piano) and Language Arts since my BA is in Music Education and I've been teaching piano for over 30 years, but my MA is in Liberal Studies/Literature and I've taught English at the college level. I am extremely patient and kind, and know the importance of allowing the student to succeed, repeating the basics as many times as is necessary and making the lesson lively and fun. I've been a teacher my whole life and love the work; I find it fulfilling and fun to work with young people and especially, to teach them the subjects I love most - reading, writing and music.

Writing

I am a Writing and Reading Teacher who tutors students individually and has taught English and Developmental Reading in Union County College. Proofreading

I have worked as an Editor for a Trade Association's magazine and newsletter. I have also written and edited copy for the Westfield Symphony Orchestra' concert programs and brochures. Both of these positions required constant proofreading. In addition, in my daily tutoring, I actively edit and revise student essays and have done so on the HS and College levels, as well as Elementary School level. I am an extremely thorough and detail oriented proofreader with many years of experience.

Composition (Music)

For students who show an interest in music composition, I teach how to compose a melody and how to "lock in" that melody before it disappears. Students will learn shortcuts of how to write melody down, then notate it in the correct manner after they have gotten it on paper. I have three pianos in my studio, one is electric and this enables me to tape students as they play their melodies and have them listen to it on Playback and add harmony to their composition.

Ear Training

I have a BA in Music Education. I include sight singing and ear training as part of theory during piano lessons. Also include fun and challenging rhythm games which students seem to universally enjoy. Encourage students to sing and accompany themselves if they have an interest in that area.

Elementary (K-6th)

Phonics

I have utilized phonics training to help students decode words by segmenting, blending and manipulating phonemes, (i.e. the smallest units of sound,) and syllables to facilitate reading. I have trained elementary and middle school teachers on how to utilize an educational phonics based software program with their students. Have taught piano to students of all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced, for over 30 years.
I use a variety of methods books and tailor my instruction to the individual student. I incorporate theory into lessons and allow students to learn music (songs) they like as well as the ones included in piano books. Have extensive lending library of piano music for students usage

Sight Singing

Songwriting

Students who are oriented toward composing music and wish to write songs will be taught how this is done. Students will learn how to compose a melody, how to save it or "lock it" in so that they don't forget it, how to correctly notate it and how to add lyrics. Students will be encouraged to be creative but at the same time, I will help them give their song(s) a cohesive structure. Students will lean to sing and/or play their original song. Speech

I am an English teacher who has worked at college level and has also trained Elementary School teachers on how to utilize a reading program that deals in phonemic and phonological awareness.
