I am a NJ certified teacher and reading specialist who has worked in the public schools as a basic skills teacher for over 25 years. I currently work independently as a reading coach providing instructional services to teachers. In addition, I have continued to respond to current professional development opportunities through various educational sites such as Rowan University and Reading Assist in Delaware. I have a masters degree in reading education from Rowan University. Part of the course work requires us to learn to administer, interpret, and plan for remediation of all reading problems. Having a classification such as ADD/ADHD just requires more diversification in planning. We need to have shorter activities with lots of hands-on activities to keep the learned actively engaged. During the clinical course work we worked with a variety of students with ADD and ADHD and yes we dealt with it by making the appropriate modifications in our lesson plans.

I have a NJ Speech Correctionist certificate after minoring in speech correction at Rowan University. A very large part of this certificate required college level courses in audiology and phonemic awareness. Learning how to administer and read a hearing test, what frequencies in particular made speech difficult to understand, where all skills that were mastered under clinical supervision. As part of a clinical practice, we had to learn how to teach someone how to say phonemes when a hearing loss was present.
