My name is Shawn, and I live in Robbinsville, New Jersey. I am 19 years old and attended Robbinsville High School where I finished with a top 5 ranking in my class, and I am now a sophomore at The College of New Jersey, where I am an applied mathematics major. Throughout my experience at The College of New Jersey, I have maintained a 4.0 in major GPA, and a 3.94 GPA overall. In terms of tutoring experience, I have been tutoring since high school. In my high school I signed up for the peer tutoring service, and at The College of New Jersey I am registered to tutor as well. I have noticed through my experience that each student will have different tutoring techniques that are successful. My most useful technique is to practice the topic of study, observe what the student is not understanding and focus only on that. I often notice with math topics that when a student is confused about one aspect of the material, it can make the other material seem very difficult, because math is very cumulative. I enjoy math and it has always been my strongest subject, and I enjoy tutoring others!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Discrete Math

During my freshman year of college at The College of New Jersey, I was required to take MAT 200, which is titled Discrete Mathematics through proof writing. The class was difficult at first, but often the hardest concepts can be understood and then applied to understand other concepts. I finished the course with an A, and often tutored fellow classmates that were struggling to understand the information.
