I'm graduating from Rutgers University with Ph.D. in Education in May and my focus is in Educational Psychology. I tutor in Trenton and the surrounding area as well as New Brunswick, NJ since I often am there for work. I received a Master's degree in Education (May, 2011) and passed my dissertation defense recently. My teaching experiences have been diverse:

1. Tutoring: K-8 tutor (~8 years experience in afterschool programs), high school tutor (1 year experience afterschool, 1 year experience in-school), undergraduate peer tutor (applied statistics for psychology, 2 years experience at Lafayette College), graduate student tutor (introductory-level applied statistics, 3 years paid experience, additional volunteer experience)

2. Classroom teaching: Undergraduate-level educational psychology (Principles of Classroom Learning) at Rutgers University (3 years experience)

3. Informal learning environments: academic coaching at Rutgers University (1 year), summer English with Upward Bound program at Rutgers University (3 months), afterschool programs (8 years), church-affiliated programs (~6 years experience), summer camp (2 years experience, grades K-8), in-home assistance for adults with mental illnesses and/or disabilities (mental and/or physical)(3 years experience), youth mentor (3 years experience, one-on-one)

I adapt my approach to fit the needs of the student, regardless of age, but I tend to focus on methods that foster socioemotional development and self-regulated learning; my philosophy of teaching is built upon sociocultural and social constructivist theories of learning. I also specialize in student achievement motivation, so I consider motivational concerns when I decide how to approach each individual student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 8 years' experience tutoring K-8 students. I also possess a Master of Arts degree in Education from Rutgers Graduate School of Education. My methods focus on enhancing student motivation and encouraging self regulated learning through promoting strategy use.

GRE

I took the GRE in 2009. I scored 690 on both math and verbal and a 4 on writing. I did my own test prep and work with both Princeton Review and Kaplan materials. I also use online supplementary materials. My approach is focused on review of content, development of strategies, and reduction of test anxiety.

Psychology

I majored in psychology as an undergraduate from 2005-2009 and have been in an educational psychology PhD program since 2009. I have taken courses in counseling and clinical, cognition and instruction, development, applied behavior analysis, social psychology, statistical methods, autism, and motivation. I have also tutored students in applied statistics for psychology.

Spanish

I have 5 years of experience in Spanish classes. I also have spent a brief period using the language in the Dominican Republic. I also have been required to speak the language for work in after school programs. I am not a native speaker.

SPSS

I have 8 years' experience using SPSS for psychology and education research. I have taken 3 semesters of undergraduate courses requiring use of the software and 4 doctoral courses requiring use of the software. I have tutored graduate and undergraduates unofficially on use of the program.

Statistics

I am qualified to teach applied statistics at the undergraduate level and graduate level in the social sciences. My undergraduate course work included the following statistics courses in psychology: quantitative methods for psychology (descriptives, z-tests, t-tests, chi-square tests, ANOVA), design and analysis (application of methods to research), and design and analysis II (introduction to advanced research methods such as factor analysis and multiple regression). My doctoral level applied statistics course work in Educational Psychology included: introduction to quantitative methods, ANOVA, regression, multivariate statistics, structural equation modeling, and hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). I can tutor at any age level for introductory level statistics and can tutor in more advanced statistics given that the focus is on application and/or design of research; I have experience tutoring students in intro applied statistics at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Study Skills

I have experience working with students at all grade levels on study skills and motivation. I also am well-read in methods for supporting students with ADHD. I currently work part time as an academic coach at Rutgers University, as well.

Writing

I have been a peer reviewer for academic publications and have peer edited work up to the graduate level. I focus primarily on feedback for better conveying ideas through writing, but can also help with grammar and spelling. I've helped students with personal statements, college admissions essays, cover letters, essays, problem statements, and research reports. I have helped K-12 students, undergraduate students, graduate students, and non-native English speakers up to the undergraduate level with writing assignments and building skills.
