I am a former public school teacher who taught for many years. I am certified to teach students in grades K-8, but have taught Language Arts (Reading and Writing) to students in grade 9. After leaving public school teaching, I worked in Catholic and Private schools for several years. Since then, I have mainly been doing tutoring work in Math, Reading, and Writing. I enjoy tutoring because I love helping students learn.
I am a former elementary school teacher. I taught for 27 years. I went to College of New Jersey and received a BA degree in Elementary Education and a New Jersey teaching certificate to teach grades K-8. When I was teaching in public school, I
taught all subject areas.
I have taught students in grades 1-8 and grammar has been an area that I have helped students improve in. Other than being a classroom teacher, I have been a remedial and Basic Skills teacher and have worked with students individually and small groups on their grammar and writing skills. For the past 5 years I have been working with students on their Language Art skills to help them improve their scores on the NJASK Test.
I know the types of writing that is required on the NJASK Test and this is what I have been working on with the students. I have students write essays using the different types of writing and then together we proofread and go over corrections. I have had good results with the students I have worked with.
I have worked with kindergarten and first grade students on phonics in which we have gone over the letters of the alphabet, the sounds they make, including vowel sounds (short and long), consonant sounds, blends, etc. I have taught word recognition by use of the students' knowledge of phonics and have also taught a basic sight vocabulary to preschool and kindergarten students after they have learned letter and sound recognition. While teaching kindergarten and first grade, I had the responsibility of teaching my students how to read. Where I taught, they had a phonics program that they used. I used this program with my students to help them learn the relationships between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language. I believed that if you learn there
are predictable relationships between sounds and letters, that this will allow children to apply these relationships to both familiar and unfamiliar words and they will then begin to read with fluency as I evidenced with the students I worked with. I taught kindergarteners and first graders in the Catholic and private schools I worked in and also had students in these grades that were
having difficulty in reading to work in small groups with me.
I have worked with six and seven year olds in a small group setting and on a individual basis in helping them to improve their reading skills. I have taught reading programs based on phonics, vowel sounds, beginning and ending sounds, blends, etc. which have helped students to read better. I have worked as a remedial teacher in which I was asked to go into schools and help students who were struggling with their reading skills. I have had good results with students in helping them to improve their reading skills.
During my many years of teaching in grades K-8, and my years of tutoring, I have taught my students study skills to help them improve their learning. I have found that many students lack study skills, so during my teaching and tutoring I have worked with them on organization of their materials and supplies, note taking using outlines to help them study from, and trying to avoid distractions while studying by choosing a quiet place to study and do homework. I feel that with my many years of working with students, I am qualified to teach study skills.
I am experienced with the different types of writing that they have on the New Jersey ASK Test and I am able to teach students how to write essays exhibiting each type of writing.
