About Farah

I hold a PhD in education and a Master's in curriculum and instructional sciences. For the past 20 years, I have been teaching middle school, high school and post secondary students, one-to-one and group classes, providing academic tutoring as well as preparing students for standardized exams.

My personal philosophy of education lies within a constructivist and transformational model of education where the role of the teacher is not to teach the “what” but the “how.” Rather than viewing education as a medium for transmitting knowledge from educators to students, I believe that the role of education is to create conditions and opportunities where it makes possible for learning to become a process of discovery and allows students to construct their own skills, knowledge, and understanding. From this perspective, the educator must put the learner at the center while developing the curriculum, by focusing on independent learning, task based learning, and meaningful learning. The role of the teacher thus becomes that of a guide providing access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information. Looking at education through this lens, learning becomes a process of comparing new knowledge and experiences to the previous ones, thence, leading to reinforcement and/or adaptation of that knowledge.

So I provide students with differentiated levels of study material, analyze their weak areas and provide them work to improve on those areas. I make sure that the instruction is tailored to individual's needs and focuses on student's weak areas. I believe in sending reports to help communicate the value of tutoring and progress reports to keep students accountable and keep parents in the loop.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have been teaching/tutoring the math section of ACT for the past ten years. During the first session, I evaluate the student(s), then I use an individualized approach focusing on strengthening student's weakness as well as a comprehensive subject review. Also, I work with the student on test taking strategies and study tips which make a difference in the score. I use full length tests, online resources and my own material.

Algebra 1

I am a New Jersey licensed math teacher (K-12) and I have been teaching pre-algebra, algebra I and algebra II for the past ten years. I have taught middle school and high school as well as college students. I am familiar with all learning styles and teaching methods and I tailor my teaching to the needs of each student. All my students, after having taken a few session with me, state an enthusiasm in learning math and a higher grade in their classes.

All my students after having taken a few session with me, state an enthusiasm in learning math and a higher grade in their classes.

ASVAB

For the past one year, I have been asked to teach/tutor the math section of ASVAB. After teaching a few sessions, my students express a deeper understanding of core concepts in addition to having more confidence in their test taking abilities. During the first session, I give my student a diagnostic test to pinpoint his/her weakness and from there I devise an individualized instruction plan to work on main concepts and strengthen the weaknesses. After evaluation and some tutoring, my students have raised their grades and passed the test and joined the army.

Elementary Math

when teaching math to elementary school students, you have to be even more cognizant of different ways of learning and various methods of teaching a lesson. At elementary school, it is very important to understand math deeply because what students learn here is the basic building blocks of the future mathematics that they will be learning. A teacher/tutor has to constantly evaluate and tailor the teaching style to each and every student and make sure the instruction is effective so that the student can strengthen self confidence as well as basic and fundamental math and study skills. I have been teaching elementary school students for so many years and I love to teach them and watch them learn and develop a love of learning in general and mathematics in particular.

ESL/ESOL

I have many years of experience teaching English as a Second Language to various populations and at different institutions nationally and internationally.

Farsi

Farsi is my mother language and I have complete proficiency in it. I have taught this language at various Sunday schools, universities and in my private teaching classes.

GED

I have been teaching/tutoring the math section of GRE for the past ten years. Grammar

I am bilingual. I know about the challenges of learning another language and how it might influence your learning process from all different angles with all complex layers. I have taught grammar and ESL at the college level for four years and I do editing for a couple of publications. I can help you learn the language effectively and feel better about yourself.

Prealgebra

I am a New Jersey licensed math teacher (K-12) and I have been teaching Pre-Algebra for the past ten years. I have taught to all grade levels including middle school and high school as well as college students. I am familiar with all learning styles and teaching methods and I tailor my teaching to the needs of each student. All my students after having taken a few session with me, state an enthusiasm in learning math and a higher grade in their classes.

PSAT

I have been teaching/tutoring the math section of PSAT and SSAT for many years. When I start a session with a student(s), first, I evaluate the student(s), then I use an individualized approach focusing on strengthening student's weakness as well as a comprehensive subject review. This is a great point in the student's life where they can begin to learn test taking methods and strategies. These skills will continue to be a great asset for all tests to come. I make sure all my students learn these skills as well as the core mathematical knowledge. I use full length tests, online resources and my own material.

QuickBooks

I work for various companies as an accountant and use QuickBooks for all accounting and bookkeeping.

SAT Math

I have been teaching/tutoring the math section of SAT, as well as the SAT Math Level 1 & 2 subject tests. During the first session, I evaluate the student(s), then I use an individualized approach focusing on strengthening student's weakness as well as a comprehensive subject review. Also, I work with the student on test taking strategies and study tips which make a difference in the score. I use full length tests, online resources and my own material.

SSAT

I have been teaching/tutoring the math section of SSAT for many years. During the first session, I evaluate the student(s) to see which areas of the test the student needs to improve on. Afterwards, I use an individualized approach focusing on strengthening student's weakness as well as mastering other parts. Also, I work with the student on test taking strategies and study tips which make a difference in the score and timing. I use full length tests, online resources and my own material.

Study Skills

I’ve had the opportunity to teach nationally and internationally to various age groups from elementary to graduate levels and from urban to suburban populations. I am multilingual/multicultural and have worked with a variety of linguistic, cultural, and academic populations. My classroom teaching expertise and academic skills in education as well as sciences have equipped me with the essential tools to help all my student with different learning styles and from various social and institutional backgrounds. I believe that every student is capable of high levels of academic and social achievements given the opportunity and the right tools.

Great Math Tutor — When teaching a lesson, what really matters is if the instructor can take a complex topic and assume the student knows absolutely nothing about the task at hand and take him/her from zero knowledge to expert in step-by-step chunks in a reasonable time. This is what Farah R did with my daughter and I am personally thrill with her math tutoring session and I highly recommend her math tutoring servi ...
