I am an American woman that backpacked Europe for 10 months after university and after working in NYC for a magazine, as a graphic artist. I ended up meeting a nice Italian man, whom I married after two years of courting, while I received my masters from NYU I have lived in Italy for the past 20 years. I learned fluent Italian. We have three kids, ran a B&B and taught English at a local vocational high school. I love kids and look forward to tutoring in NJ where I have moved recently.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I graduated from California State University at Chico, where I earned my bachelors degree in graphic art and a minor in fine art. I studied painting, sculpting, drawing and ceramics.
I later studied in Italy through N.Y.U. where I received a masters minor in fine art. I studied art in Venice with Italian artists and expressed myself every day for the 2 months I was abroad.
I have my own studio, where I have been giving private lessons to budding artists.

Elementary (K-6th)

After receiving my bachelors from California Sate University at Chico and my Masters from N.Y.U., I moved to Italy where I taught nursery school English. We played games, learned the alphabet and numbers while they were engulfed in affection and approval. These groups of 20 or more kids, came very voluntarily to school and left every day with a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Not only were they having fun, but they were learning basic English that would prepare them for the first grade.
I also taught in a local high school for years, where I had to help students understand material that may have been difficult for them to comprehend. Working together to mature and learn which study skills were best for them so they could have the best results.

English

I am a college graduate, with a masters from N.Y.U. I spent the last 20 years in Italy, where I raised my children bilingual. They are fluent in English and they speak it without an accent. I taught English at a local nursery school and a local high school. I love kids and have worked with many different types of characters. I have also worked with dyslexic and dysgrafic children with very good results.

Grammar

I have put myself through university and a masters program. I have a firm grip on how to teach others. I have been teaching English in a local high school for years. The classes were always very large and there was a wide realm of different students, with different needs. It has helped me understand the difficulties a student may have with grammar.
Prior to that, I worked in a nursery school and raised my three children bilingual. The latter of the two was quite a challenge, as many people were not happy that my children were (supposedly) putting Italian on the back burner.
Now, 13,16 and 18 years old they speak both Italian and English, fluently, without an accent.

Italian

I learned Italian by being thrown into the everyday Italian life upon moving to Italy, marrying and restoring our villa which we turned into a B&B. Dealing with masons, plumbers and carpenters really forced me to pick up the language, quickly. Socializing with our guests, has helped me refine the language.

I have lived in Italy for 20 years and have taught at a local high school, while running my B&B during the summer months.

I have three children and taught nursery school for a few years, as well.

Painting

I graduated from California State University at Chico, where I earned my bachelors degree in graphic art and a minor in fine art. I studied painting, sculpting, drawing and ceramics.

I later studied in Italy through NYU where I received a master's minor in fine art.

Painting is:
The ability to express oneself through colors, textures or paint. Giving a person a particular sensation while admiring your art work.

The knowledge of mixing and matching colors to create your feelings for others to observe.

Phonics

I learned that I had dyslexia when I was in high school. I had struggled through my classes each year with teachers that were unaware of my problem and no knowledge of how to handle it. With huge fear in my heart, I went to university, graduated with a bachelors degree and went on to receive my masters.
Through these years of school, I learned to battle dyslexia and overcome my problems that it caused me. Phonics is one of the most basic, but important parts of learning how to read, write and speak well.
Since I was ridiculed for many of my childhood years, I am very patient with the children I work with. I know that encouragement and love are two corner stones to improve a child's learning ability.
I taught in a vocational high school for years and I have come across adolescents that needed to re-learn phonics so they were able to read, write or speak better. Working with them has taught me to be able to teach phonics to others.

Reading

I have put myself through university and a masters program and I have a firm grip on how to teach others.
I have worked with students as a tutor and as a teacher over the years, helping them with their reading skills. I have helped them retain and summarize what they have read. I have also worked with children with special problems such as dyslexia.

Study Skills

Everyone learns in a different way. We can not force a child to learn the way we learn best. It is best to find the way he or she learns best. Therefore, study skills are fundamental to his or her improvement in school. Once they find the way to remember things , the easier the subject becomes and the easier their subjects are for them to understand, the more they enjoy going to school.
I am very patient with the children I work with. I know that encouragement and love are two corner stones to improve a child's learning ability. I have studied many methods of studying and have many options to offer.
Working in a local high school, teaching English, has helped me understand the troubles some students may have and why. This makes it easier to help them.

Theatre

I graduated NYU with a masters in Theatre, where I learned to direct, act and the history of the theatre. I have taught theatre lessons to private people and to groups.

Not only is acting fun and gives you the chance to be someone you aren't ... it also helps you with, enunciating, public speaking and socializing with people you do not know well. (Theatre is: An opportunity to act out a part, make people believe you are something or someone else. Being on stage, enveloping the audience. Making believe. A place to act out a scene.)

Writing

Since I am dyslexic, and found out about it in high school, I had to struggle through grammar, reading and writing, in my younger years. The ridicule and the derogatory comments from classmates and teachers alike, made it almost impossible to hold any information learned. But, when I discovered that this learning disability did not have to be a handicap, it became a plus in enhancing my ability to understand grammar technique, reading comprehension and writing skills.

I have put myself through university and a masters program and I have a firm grip on how to teach others.
