I'm an English
tutor currently seeking certification to teach here in New Jersey. I specialize in honing reading
skills to improve reading comprehension and encourage critical thinking, but I can also help students form productive and efficient study skills
that will help them succeed in a variety of subjects, not just English.
My main goals in tutoring English are improving literacy and developing effective writing skills. Reading and writing are not just for word nerds -- they are crucial elements of communication, and mastery of these subjects can give students an important advantage as they look to the future in college or in the job market. I can help students of all levels -- whether they're struggling with the 'building blocks' of language
arts like spelling
or trying to tackle War and Peace.
My approach to tutoring is simple: address the student's needs. In an ordinary classroom, many students don't get the one-on-one commitment from the teacher that they really need to excel
and meet their goals. Through my tutoring sessions, I learn from my students what they need to succeed, and I strive to shape the learning process to meet their needs. I want my students to feel comfortable and confident in their learning environment. Their success is my first priority.
My day job is currently working as a paralegal in a small law
firm, but I have my B.A. in Writing from Loyola University Maryland and an M.A. in Creative Writing from Newcastle University in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, including extensive coursework in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, essays, and literary analysis. At Loyola, I finished with an overall GPA of 3.5, and during my time at Newcastle, I earned high marks and graduated at the top of my class with Distinction. I am well-versed in writing appropriate college and graduate school admissions essays, as well as preparing for the writing and verbal sections of the SAT
In my spare time, I read and write for fun to keep my skills sharp. I am currently in the process of applying for my Certificate of Eligibility to teach in New Jersey, and I hope to obtain this certification before the beginning of the next school year.
Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions you may have -- I look forward to hearing from you!
