C

I am a PhD Computational Scientist with considerable experience in writing custom scientific software. Over the course of my career thus far, I estimate that I have written approximately 20,000 lines of C code, including two large data analysis packages. I have experience training graduate students in C programming, and can certainly help anybody learning C at the beginning to intermediate level.

Computer Programming

I have considerable experience in a wide range of computer programming activities, ranging from web programming to sophisticated scientific number crunching. I have a firm grasp of the concepts and applications of different computer programming paradigms (procedural, functional, event-based, object oriented, etc.) and can communicate those concepts to students.

Computer Science

My 10+ years in computational science research has given me substantial practical experience in computer science topics, including algorithm design and analysis, computational complexity, algorithms for graph theory and other discrete math problems, and numerical algorithms for algebra, statistics and calculus. My practical experience allows me to not only present the theoretical aspects of computer science, but connect it to applications in practical computer programming.

Discrete Math

I have real-world practical experience with several disciplines that fall under the rubric of "discrete math", including graph theory, information theory, operations research, and combinatorics. Not only have I applied these methods to research problems, I also have experience explaining these concepts to both students and supervisors.

Genetics

In addition to my coursework in general and advanced eukaryotic genetics as a graduate student, my work as a research professor involved a significant amount of genetics, especially population genetics (one of the sub-disciplines of genetics that many students find particularly mysterious and confusing). In my experience, learning genetics is fundamentally about learning the terminology and a few simple concepts, and then learning to apply these concepts to a variety of situations. I can bring my real-world scientific experience and ability to explain concepts and their application in terms of examples and analogies to help anybody struggling with genetics.

Linear Algebra

In my 15 years of experience in scientific research as a graduate student and research professor, I have made extensive use of linear algebra in my own research work and have to helped train others in the use of linear algebra for their research. Thus, I can not only explain linear algebra to students, but also provide examples of how it is used in real-life applications.

Mathematica

I have been a user of Mathematica in the context of scientific research since the early 1990s, and have a very strong understanding of the fundamentals of the software and how to use it to solve mathematical and data analysis problems. I can help anybody who is struggling with the learning curve of this powerful but sometimes confusing behemoth of a computer program.

Perl

I am a PhD Computational Scientist, and in the course of my research I have written hundreds of Perl programs to solve computational problems. I have an excellent knowledge of the language, and I have experience training graduate students to program in Perl.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
