I am a native Spanish speaker born in Colombia, South America. I have lived in the United States for 30 years and speak fluent English. I graduated with a BA in Communications from Temple University in Philadelphia and I also obtained my Spanish teaching license at Rowan University. I taught Spanish for three years, two in the High School and one year in the Elementary school and I have also taught privately. During the past five years I have taught English as a second language and Civics to immigrants who want to become American citizens. I also work as a Spanish-English interpreter from time to time.
The first thing I do is evaluate the student to find out how much he/she knows to get the idea what they need.
For a student who is taking Spanish in school, I follow what is being taught in school and add some of my own strategies for improvement.
I try to work around themes incorporating basic principles of Spanish, vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension and conversation among other things.
I consider that in today's world it is extremely important to learn a second language not only to be able to access more opportunities for work, but for personal development and self esteem. I take pride to be able to communicate in two languages and I want my students to experience the same feeling.
