My tutoring style is hands on and "let's get right to work". I like to start with the students most recent questions, like from that day in class or their last assignment. By working on what is current it builds confidence quickly. Also as the student and I work together longer other questions, misconceptions or gaps in their understanding are revealed and made whole and complete. After we have exhausted all of the students questions & concerns and all obvious gaps in understanding we can consider if it is the right time for a diagnostic test to look for other ares of misunderstanding or just plain old gaps. If possible I am quite happy to reach out to the Math teacher in the classroom to coordinate our work at tutoring and empowering your student.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Discrete mathematics is the branch of mathematics dealing with objects that can assume only distinct, separated values. The term "discrete mathematics" is therefore used in contrast with "continuous mathematics," which is the branch of mathematics dealing with objects that can vary smoothly (and which includes, for example, calculus). Whereas discrete objects can often be characterized by integers, continuous objects require real numbers.
I am competent in my topics in Discrete Math. In 1998 I spent 6 weeks in advanced Graph theory one of the topics in Discrete Math at Rutgers. The program was for HS Math teachers led by PhD's in Discrete Math from around the world. In completing my Math degree from Rutgers known for its rigorous Math program I successfully completed courses in Abstract Algebra, Logic, Computer Science, Programing in Pascal, Probability and Combinatorics and Discrete Math that had topics in Topology, Number Theory, Set Theory, Game Theory and Graph Theory. I found all of these topics engaging and enjoyed learning them.
Discrete Math does not have a agreed upon definition, but does include all of the topics I have listed above and agrees that anything that is considered "Continuous" is not included in Discrete Math. That is Discrete Math involves the topics that are countable and measurable.
Pre-Algebra is the strong foundation work for Algebra. It is often called Algebra Readiness. I have taken many workshops in this topic.
Partly it the fundamental math one needs, partly it is an exploration of more advanced problem solving skills, partly it is having greater stamina in solving problems and bring more creativity to bare.
It is the beginning of discovering all the roots of the different branches in Mathematics. It is also when you begin to discover the kind of math that does not just have "One Right Answer". This goes against the way it has always been. It is the beginning of thinking logically which is the ground work to computer programing.
