Patient, Encouraging and Highly Effective K-10/College Math Tutor

I have been a Professional Tutor at a local community college for the last 16 years. I have effectively tutored Computational Math and Introduction to College Algebra to a wide variety of students with various learning styles. Students have complimented me on my ability to explain concepts/step-by-step methods of solving various equations in such a clear manner, they want me to become a classroom instructor. Professors in the Math Division recommend me to their students to assist in their understanding of the concepts learned in class.

I listen well, have an encouraging, caring attitude about students and a good sense of humor. I use self-prepared hand-outs to explain algebraic concepts. Students have told me that these hand-outs have been very helpful to them as they study and learn the material.

Algebra 1

I have had 16 years successfully tutoring Algebra I at the college level. I have personally written supplemental information sheets detailing numerous topics covered in Algebra I classes.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Masters in Education, with a concentration in Developmental Reading. While in Graduate School I worked in the Reading and Study Skills Lab. I assisted students in fine-tuning their study skills and introduced new methods to them. I also helped students who had questions about their Psychology courses. During these tutoring sessions, I was able to help students use techniques to read their textbooks more effectively so they could get the information they needed to succeed in their class.

Study Skills

I teach effective note-taking tips/strategies. I also teach skills which enhance reading textbooks, i.e. turning each subheading into a question and reading the section to find the answer. I encourage studying each subject and every day.

Special Needs

I have worked with college students with special learning styles for the last 16 years. I found the students was successful when I gave them self-prepared handouts which reinforced the mathematical concepts the student was studying at the time. I also worked with students in a one-to-one situation.

ADD/ADHD

I have tutored several college level students with learning disabilities for 16 years. I have found success when we can work one on one in a setting with no distractions.
