I have a PhD in literature and experience teaching at the college level. My focus in tutoring is to get students to do “critical” reading, which is to discover and understand the information and ideas in a piece of writing, and then to evaluate this information in order to carefully reflect and analyze the work.
Critical writing follows critical reading when students are able to make their own argument in the paper and support it from their critical reading of the text. This is a skill that will go beyond their tutoring session with me because they are being trained to become “critical” thinkers who can look at any given topic in more than just a literal way with the goal of analysis. Such an approach has many benefits, and one benefit is watching students gain confidence and competence by becoming critical thinkers, readers and writers.
Seeing students learn and grow gives me much satisfaction, and I approach students with a passion, dedication and dynamism that can be contagious.
