Cornell University (Structural Engineeri)
I graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Structural Engineering. I'm a licensed professional engineer with 16 years of engineering design and project management experience in both the government and private sector. I've tutored both as a paid college tutor and private students.
I really enjoy working one-on-one to help students overcome their challenges in mastering a subject. Ultimately, students I work with don't just come away with more knowledge, but a clear increase in confidence that they can apply toward their next challenge. It's a great feeling to help people move forward in their endeavors.
My goal is long term improvement in your efforts to better yourself. It's not just about getting through a course or exam or assignment. We'll focus on your performance and the habits and methods you employ to achieve, and we'll always pursue improvement on the last time. It’s work, but no reason it can’t be fun!
As a student, despite high aptitude, I struggled with technical subjects and worked hard to finish them. I realized that many learning environments use the rigidity of the coursework to make people feel inadequate. And they wonder why more people don't pursue technical studies like science, technology, engineering and math! Solving problems by using what we learn is an essential part of what makes our country successful in many industries, and it is also immensely satisfying! My goal as a tutor is to enable students to power through the uphill portions of their studies so that they graduate or get certified and go on to successful endeavors in business, industry, service and non-profit positions.
Herbert Spencer said, “The great aim of education is not knowledge but action."
I'm eager to help educate students with an eye for getting them into the action! The world needs their abilities, dreams and ambitions to be better. Being part of your success is very enjoyable and satisfying for me. It's not just about helping one person, but the rest of the world to succeed! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra is a standard high school math subject that I got a solid "A" in. Good thing too since algebra forms the basis for much of the material I studied at Cornell University as a structural engineering student. But just as important as the mastery of the technical concepts is the ability to communicate those concepts to a student so that he/she can solve the problems on their own, especially on an exam. I'm a strong communicator and I'm very attuned to the signs and signals of whether a student is engaged or just not getting it. If needed we adjust so that real learning happens.
I hold a BS in Civil & Environmental Engineering and a PE license from Connecticut.
Math can really trip up young students wearing down their confidence. In addition to learning the specific material your student must gain the confidence that comes from having faced challenging problems and overcome. That confidence will help them in areas beyond math and other subjects. It's rewarding to develop that in students, and I hope to get a chance to work with yours!
I studied project scheduling and used MS Project while earning a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University. The course was on project and construction management which often uses MS Project to track project schedule and resources. In my work as a civil engineer consultant with a leading multinational engineering firm, I routinely used MS Project to track work and evaluate payment applications from contractors.
