Expert tutor for SAT R/W, ACT, English, Latin & ancient Greek

I am a very experienced and patient tutor who loves teaching. My knowledge of classical languages enhances my expertise in instructing students not only in those languages, but also in English and social studies and the skills assessed in the Praxis exams and the critical reading and writing test sections of the SAT and ACT. Having received a BA from Middlebury College and a MA from the University of Virginia in Latin and ancient Greek, I recognize how important grades and scores are in this competitive era. My joy is to help students realize their potential. Students under my tutelage have met with extraordinary success on standardized tests (including the ACT, SAT, and GRE) coursework and college applications. I have taught in secondary schools and at the university level. Beginners of all ages and abilities are welcome (including college age).

My method of tutoring is clear and direct. I assess the student's needs by listening and posing diagnostic questions to determine our course of study. I am happy to work with any book or method that facilitates learning.

I am a full-time teacher at Millburn High School. Thus, I am available in the afternoon and on some weekends.

Latin

My students are taught to look at grammar as a roadmap to success. I also provide them with helpful shortcut for memorizing vocabulary. My students appreciate the depth of my knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. Students often comment on on my ability to explain things clearly. Reading

I train my students to analyze tone, diction, and style by decoding context clues. My students learn to recognize and produce the essential components of good writing: correct grammar, careful word selection, and a clear presentation of logical ideas. I enjoy teaching my pupils to discern different literary genres and rhetorical devices. My students also deconstruct meaning from an understanding of the socio-political and historical background of the author and his audience.

Writing

I teach my students to write clearly and persuasively. Students under my guidance learn to present logical, well supported, and original arguments that engage and convince their audience.

English

My students learn to analyze texts for content, style, and meaning by decoding context clues and diction. Under my guidance, students learn to interpret literature within the context of literary history and the socio-economic conditions that shape writers and their readers. I instruct my students in literary terms, rhetorical devices, and the components of successful argumentation. Students under my tutelage acquire the skills necessary for writing and speaking clearly and persuasively.

I guide and instruct students to write clear, effective, and persuasive, essays. My students learn the spelling and grammatical rules necessary for excellent writing of all sorts including college applications, standardized tests, and other assessments.

ACT English

My ACT English students learn to analyze texts for content, style, and meaning by decoding context clues and diction. I instruct my students in the fine points of grammar and the components of successful argumentation. Students under my tutelage acquire the skills necessary for writing and speaking clearly and persuasively.

Dutch

I am fluent in Dutch; I lived and worked in the Netherlands for over seven years.

ISEE

I have prepared students for the ISEE for many years. Having both taught in and attended private school, I am well versed in the academic expectations of independent schools and enjoy preparing young people for the intellectual challenges of rigorous academic communities.

Praxis

I have been trained in Praxis test preparation (and other standardized tests) as part of my professional development as a teacher and in my coursework as a doctoral candidate in Education. I instruct my students to pinpoint their strengths and weakness to better shape their course of study. I apply my knowledge of educational theory and empirical data to maximize my students' opportunities for success.

Social Studies

My approach to Social Studies rests on a foundation of political philosophy in which I minored at Middlebury College, where I earned my BA in Classics. I train my students to analyze the efficacy of different forms of government. We explore how each system and political culture solves problems.
