My tutoring career began during college as an undergraduate student. Although I was an English major, my first tutoring assignment was math! I didn't have to solicit, other students came to me and said the way I explained mathematical problems made it easier to comprehend. One thing led to another and before you know it I was tutoring all over campus at SUNY Plattsburgh. I transferred back home to Brooklyn and went to CUNY York College where I worked at the English Department's Writing Lab. I worked with all students, including ESL students, in addition to other students who came in to strengthen their writing skills, and English composition overall.
I continued tutoring as a Graduate student at CUNY Queens College. As a Graduate Assistant, I helped students write entrance essays for Graduate school. Tutoring is something that comes naturally to me. I love learning and helping others learn as it's absolutely gratifying.
I believe my teaching style is based on personality. I'm extremely intuitive and can pick up on an introvert, extrovert or generally what kind of thinker a person is and then I take it from there. Everyone goes at a different pace and people's minds work differently so I teach them from that perspective for maximum achievement and minimal frustration. Of course it takes hard work on their part and patience and strategy on mine. I have a lot of patience and try to get to know my students a little before the lessons even begin. that way it becomes personal to both of us and chemistry is everything. Going forward I try to incorporate things that children enjoy so they don't dread learning. I've always loved reading and writing. As the youngest of 4 I was a jealous 5 year old because my sisters could read and I couldn't and insisted that my mother teach me. By the time I was 7 I was reading on a college level and writing essays. I have a B.A from CUNY York College in English and an M.A. from Queens College. My full time job is for the Department of Homeland Security.
I love kids and I love teaching so tutoring, for me, is a win-win.
I'm qualified to tutor in this subject, because I have been working with PowerPoint for over ten years in the public and private sectors. I have created complicated presentations for myself, CEO's and government officials.
As a proficient student of MSOffice I believe my strength in the MSOffice suite is Word. I have used this application from general correspondence to complicated mail merges for over a decade. I have also informally taught Word in the office, pun intended. Please add MS Word as one of my qualifications. Thank you!
As a professional tutor with over a decade of experience with students of all ages, it's important to use methods specific to the individual student. Using some study skills that are considered standard work for most people but I prefer to speak to the student, and their parent(s) where applicable, to see what comes naturally to them in order to develop not just study skills but healthy educational habits that foster performance excellence.
