My tutoring career began during college as an undergraduate student. Although I was an English
major, my first tutoring assignment was math
! I didn't have to solicit, other students came to me and said the way I explained mathematical problems made it easier to comprehend. One thing led to another and before you know it I was tutoring all over campus at SUNY Plattsburgh. I transferred back home to Brooklyn and went to CUNY York College where I worked at the English Department's Writing
Lab. I worked with all students, including ESL
students, in addition to other students who came in to strengthen their writing skills, and English composition overall.
I continued tutoring as a Graduate student at CUNY Queens College. As a Graduate Assistant, I helped students write entrance essays for Graduate school. Tutoring is something that comes naturally to me. I love learning and helping others learn as it's absolutely gratifying.
I believe my teaching style is based on personality. I'm extremely intuitive and can pick up on an introvert, extrovert or generally what kind of thinker a person is and then I take it from there. Everyone goes at a different pace and people's minds work differently so I teach them from that perspective for maximum achievement and minimal frustration. Of course it takes hard work on their part and patience and strategy on mine. I have a lot of patience and try to get to know my students a little before the lessons even begin. that way it becomes personal to both of us and chemistry
is everything. Going forward I try to incorporate things that children enjoy so they don't dread learning. I've always loved reading
and writing. As the youngest of 4 I was a jealous 5 year old because my sisters could read and I couldn't and insisted that my mother teach me. By the time I was 7 I was reading on a college level and writing essays. I have a B.A from CUNY York College in English and an M.A. from Queens College. My full time job is for the Department of Homeland Security.
I love kids and I love teaching so tutoring, for me, is a win-win.
