Retired math teacher. Since retiring from teaching (after 25 years), I really miss working with young people and sharing my love of MATHEMATICS! Over the years, I have taught all subjects from Basic Skills, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, College Algebra, Precalculus, and SAT Math. I have had a very rewarding career and my students were very successful! When I sit down with a student, I am able to define areas where students are having difficulty and remediate these problem areas.
Mathematics evolved over the past few thousand years as a way to answer questions about real-life. Algebra is the collection and categorization of many different rules, formulas and properties. A typical Algebra 1 course reinforces the very basics of solving, graphing, and writing linear equations and inequalities. The next step introduces powers and exponents, quadratic equations along with polynomials and factoring.
I like to emphasize WHY a particular concept is being learned along with the real-life CONNECTION. I believe these "conncections" help in the understanding of the material. Algebra is NOT a spectator sport--It is a valuable tool that can be used in everyday life!

I am able to identify where students are having difficulty and show them how to correctly do the problems. Sometimes, other basic skills need to be reviewed! I try to relate the concepts to real-life situations so they have a reference point and then they can make the connection. My students usually feel much better about the algebra and then they have a solid foundation for future math courses/proficiency tests.
"Pre-algebra" skills are the foundation for all high school mathematics. This grouping includes numerical operations, basic geometry, identifying patterns, data analysis, and basic statistics. Often students require a review of basic arithmetic skills in order to be successful. Most of these concepts will be seen in future math classes/proficiency tests. I also work with my students to develop the expertise of answering "open-ended" questions. As an experienced teacher, I know the skills and concepts that are necessary for success in a pre-calculus class. A pre-calculus class involves using critical thinking skills to analyze a problem, not just coming up with a single answer. Basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry topics along with their graphs are used as the foundation. The level of difficulty is increased as multiple concepts are related. I take the time to make sure that my students are comfortable with basics before we can move ahead.
When I teach trigonometry, I like to use a variety of techniques and strategies to investigate, reason and then interpret solutions to problems. A solid foundation of the six basic trig functions along with their definitions helps to relate trigonometry to everyday life. I provide step-by-step guidance for each problem and plenty of examples to make sure the student is understanding the concept.
