My education is in the sciences. I have a Master's degree in Molecular Biology as well as in Human Nutrition. I have BS Biology and an ADA Didactic Certificate in Dietetics.

So far, I've had the great opportunity to tutor students on WyzAnt for GRE Math, pre-nursing microbiology, honors biology, Praxis II Science, biochemistry, ESL-science terminology, and ASVAB Math. It's been a great experience for me. Since my grandfathers were active duty US military officers, I offer a discount for any military members or pre-military planning to take the ASVAB. Please let me know if you serve or are planning to serve so you can get the special tutoring rate.

I have worked in the field of tutoring as a tutoring group's clerical assistant. In this capacity, I have interacted with students of special needs, ESL, older adult students, and new college students. Students generally open up to me with their tutoring needs and goals. I'm approachable, friendly, and believe that a student succeeds when they are encouraged and treated with utmost respect. I don't believe in Darwinian approaches, which can make a student feel bad if they are having trouble getting a topic.

My background is best suited for a student in the sciences or a student preparing for a test involving general science, such as GRE and ASVAB. I've also helped ESL students on Facebook in my spare time, and really enjoyed helping them to understand the language of my country. I find it very humbling to be able to help someone to succeed and make themselves a better life. My goal is to provide you with the best tutoring experience you've had yet. And that you really learn something to meet your goals.

Grades are important, but the challenge of learning a new discipline is more rewarding after all is said and done. And you will feel great when you have made your dreams and your goals come true. It just takes believing in yourself and making the time to make it happen. Don't give up.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I took Algebra I before high school. I had an excellent teacher who taught without rushing the student to understand. I bypassed my college requirements for Algebra based on my college math courses, which included Calculus I.

Anatomy

I completed and scored highly in Anatomy & Physiology I & II with labs in my college training. I used my anatomy education in my graduate research during rat dissections at my program's laboratory facility. My key to success in A&P was asking questions of the teacher during labs, and making a colored drawing of each bone, and muscle in a large sketchbook. I also included muscle origin, insertion, and action with the drawings.

ASVAB

Although, I have not taken the ASVAB, I have taken the GRE and ASTB tests. These are standardized tests that use many of the same testing procedures and skills that the ASVAB requires. The general science section would be my strong point since I have a couple of master's degrees in science. I have a great esteem for people desiring to serve this country in the military so I would offer a 25% discount upon the student's request.

Biology

I have a MS Molecular Biology, as well as a BS Biology. I have 1 year laboratory experience doing molecular techniques such as PCR and agarose gels. I have experience with genome database mining to perform data analysis.

Cooking

I have experience making homemade items such as chicken francais, chili, stew, meatloaf, and deviled eggs. I also learned many unique recipes while completing my ADA Didactic Certification in Nutrition in 2012.

I'm able to discuss safe handling of food to preserve freshness, to include proper thawing of poultry, and frozen meats as well as required cooking times and temperatures required to ensure food safety according to local food industry standards.

I have learned the importance of proper hygiene when dealing with food, esp. cutlery and utensil separation based on various items being cooked. This will prevent transmitting harmful bacteria to various food items being used.

Ecology

I have a BS Biology and MS Molecular Bio. During my biology education, I took a molecular based ecology course. In my undergrad training, I took an aquatic ecology course, which involved field visits and water testing.

English

I have helped assist fellow students at my university who struggled with grammar questions. I also helped with answering grammar questions of foreigners on a social media group for ESL students. I have proficiency with English, having taken college English composition and literature courses.

ESL/ESOL

I have helped friends on visa status with grammar issues. Because of these friendships, I have a basic knowledge of some common grammar hurdles for ESL students. I have witnessed ESL tutoring, and have been asked for coaching from students.

General Computer

I have been computer literate for about 16 years. I can help tutor areas involving basic computer questions relating to directory structures, creating folders, organizing files, storing files on external media to optimize memory, and software installation questions. I also have knowledge of XAMPP installation for PHP development.

Grammar

English is my first language. I have completed two master's degrees which involved sufficient attention to correct grammatical structure. I have taken many grammar related courses in college, including literature courses and composition.

GRE

I took the GRE in 2007 and scored a 1300 combined. I only made one attempt on the test. I studied weekly and made progress by making time for a few questions from each topic each day. I opted for my test results to be made available to universities. I was subsequently recruited to apply to do graduate work at Columbia University.

HTML

I have completed a basic computer course, as well as a computer programming for engineers course. I have studied HTML for several years now. My goal in tutoring would be to help users create a responsive website based on media / device screen size.

Microsoft Excel

I held a research assistant job at a major NY hospital part-time for 3 years. I was responsible for entering study data into excel, analyzing data with in-built excel functions, and creating graphs for presentations. I took a course involving use of excel during my college training.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Powerpoint was essential to my success in graduate school. I was able to create eye-catching presentations of research projects with Powerpoint. Powerpoint inclusion of such features as video, and slide transitions was an added benefit when giving my thesis presentation for my Master's program.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word has been a constant study / course aid in my educational programs. It has been the word processor of choice for all of my college reports. I had on-the-job training in more advanced features of word, such as headers and footers, table of contents pages, and postage labels.

Nutrition

I completed and received an ADA Didactic Certificate from Montclair State University in 2012.

I have a MS Human Nutrition from Columbia University 2007.

I have 3 years' research experience in scientific research related to obesity.

Physiology

I completed and scored highly in Anatomy & Physiology I & II with labs in my college training. I used my anatomy education in my graduate research during rat dissections at my program's laboratory facility. My key to success in physiology in particular was purchasing a cartoon coloring book for advanced physiology. Using markers to highlight processes really helped me to remember what processes were linked.

Prealgebra

I tutored a homeschooling family's son and daughter in pre-algebra according to their course curriculum. The kid's enjoyed my style of tutoring since I would reward them with small school prizes such as erasers and colorful pencils. I made the lessons fun and relevant to the things they enjoyed.

Proofreading

I have a good grasp of concise scientific writing essentials, having completed graduate education in the sciences. I've also completed numerous college English courses. I was requested to proofread teacher powerpoint presentations during my college work study job.

Reading

I'm an avid reader. During my graduate training program, I was required to read numerous reports and analyze scientific studies in a short period of time. I learned how to read for understanding and speed. Somteimes knowing the format for how to read for understanding, can spped up assimilation of the content.

Sewing

I received private tutoring in sewing during high school for 4 years from an expert seamstress who formerly owned her own dress shop in Wheaton, IL.

I have sewn garments including shorts, dresses, jumpers, bags, and embroidered handkerchiefs. I also have experience using a Babylock and Singer overlock machines / sergers. I'm familiar with terms such as fabric grain, cutting patterns correctly based on wrong side / right side directions.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary enhancement helped me achieve my educational goals. I was able to compose A grade papers in my graduate program. Learning vocabulary also helped me to score higher on the GRE.
