I offer tutoring for middle school, high school, and college level English and language arts classes. My extensive experience with English writing and literature allows me to assist students with understanding and interpreting difficult texts and completing assignments. I have experience as a writing tutor at Ursinus College, where I received my B.A. in English, and love to help students with essays and research papers. I also offer friendly and fun assistance with interpreting Shakespeare and other difficult literary language.

I am a graduate of Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA, where I received my B.A. in English, with honors. I also studied abroad at Oxford University in Oxford, England. My love of Shakespeare prompted me to write an 80-page thesis on his work. This experience allows me to work especially well with students completing long-term assignments. My three years of college tutoring included a semester of training in tutoring writing and grammar. I currently teach 10th grade English at Clayton High School.

Vocabulary

Understanding how to define unfamiliar vocabulary is a key component in successful reading and writing. I offer tutoring in memorization and using roots and context clues to define unfamiliar words.

Reading

My extensive experience with literature has allowed me to develop a keen insight into the process of reading. I can teach basic steps on how to become a better reader for younger students, and offer methods for how to become a more active and efficient reader for more experienced ones. I can enhance a student's abilities to read and retain information in any subject.

Writing

I have extensive experience and training in tutoring writing. I can work with students on assignments of any length, from half-page homework assignments to honors theses of 100 pages or more. I can tutor in writing of all genres and for all subjects and specialize in academic writing about literature.

English

My B.A. in English allows me to tutor students in all material related to general English classes including grammar, spelling, reading, and writing. I maintained a 3.98 GPA in my English classes in college and love to help students with their English and language arts assignments. I am qualified to teach high school English and able to tutor middle school through college-age students, including adults going back to school. I hope that my love of English will prove to be contagious!

Literature

My focus in college was on English literature. I am able to tutor in all world literature and love all aspects, genres, and literary periods that encompass the written and spoken word. Proofreading

I am able to tutor in - and offer personal services for - proofreading. I can teach concepts and tricks for how to become a better editor or can simply edit a manuscript with as much or little involvement as is desired by the student. Teaching proofreading is available for any age, but I usually reserve strict proofreading of essays and manuscripts for college students or adults on a tight schedule with deadlines to meet.

SAT Reading

I can provide the tips and tricks you need to ace the reading section of your SAT. General tips on improved reading skills and how to read quickly and efficiently under pressure are the key to getting the highest possible score on this section of the test. I offer practical solutions for dealing with confusing passages, unfamiliar words, pressure, and test fatigue.

SAT Writing

My experience as a college writing tutor gave me the training necessary to tutor in all aspects of writing, and my experience with standardized tests gives me the necessary specificity to tutor in this particular kind of composition. As a member of the first generation of students to take the writing section of the SAT, I understand the anxiety associated with this still relatively new section of the test and offer tips for success.
