I am a fun but focused tutor who holds a degree in ASL-English Interpreting, and I am a full-time educational sign language interpreter. For years I have tutored as well as taught American Sign Language, and English/Reading/Writing; I also have a strong background in tutoring SAT prep for the essay portion. I realize that everyone learns differently, and adapt my tutoring style accordingly. I love working with learners of all ages, and look forward to helping you on your way to fulfilling your academic goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have much experience teaching English to high school and junior high students. I have taught literature and writing classes, and am also well-versed in the art of the research paper.

Grammar

Growing up around good grammar helped to kick-start me into who I am today--someone who actually ENJOYS the subject of grammar! I have all sorts of easy ways to remember the complicated and sometimes haphazard rules associated with the English Language.

Literature

I have loved classical as well as modern literature my whole life, and I bring that joy to my tutoring. I am well-versed in almost all of the major Western literary works of any significance, and I enjoy teaching reading comprehension as well as literary analysis.

Proofreading

As a teacher, one must be good at proofreading papers, etc. I am gentle but clear when tutoring in this area, and I make it fun!

Reading

I have much experience teaching English to high school and junior high students. I have taught literature and writing classes, and am also well-versed in the art of the research paper

SAT Reading

I got nearly perfect on my SAT Reading section--now I share with my students the tricks and tips I used to get such a good score.

SAT Writing

I have been teaching SAT prep to high school students for many years, and have also given workshops on how to write a well-structured SAT timed essay.

Sign Language

I am a full-time ASL interpreter in the public school system. I have also been freelancing for many years. I hold my degree in interpreting, and I have known ASL since I was 17. I have passed my written National Interpreter Certification exam. I was an ASL tutor through my college's tutoring program, and am a former high school ASL teacher as well.

Writing

I am a writer, and I actually enjoyed the times I had to write academic essays. I have much experience in tutoring and teaching paper-writing, as well as guiding creative writing sessions.

Sometimes, people look at me oddly. For instance, when I'm telling them how much I enjoy Shakespeare, or how much it thrills me to actually proofread students' papers, or how tickled pink I get when someone realizes the difference between "effect" and "affect," or "principal" and "principle." Understandable. But, there is one good feeling that... read more

Very Nice and Patient! — I Love Chelsey! I am a student at UCC and she has gone through the same Sign Language program as I am going through now, so she knows what the program is like and what I need to learn. She lets me review what I'm not sure about, and even if it's something basic, she embraces it and goes slowly. She's bubbly and happy to help, and I can tell she loves what she does! ...
