My experience tutoring dates back to my high school years, when I was asked to tutor a young girl who had fallen behind in all of her studies due to a medical condition. It was then that I realized what even a little assistance could accomplish. My expository writing, as well as my love of English Literature have always been strong. Tutoring fellow students while striving to earn an undergraduate degree allowed me to financially support myself at that time. My Masters in Social Work also allowed me to hone those skills and tailor them to that particular subject matter.
My approach to tutoring is one of gentle coaching. The end result should always preserve the student's voice and be a representation of his or her thoughts. From reading a student's writing sample, I am able to gauge her strengths and weaknesses. By delineating the most common mistakes, I am able to guide a student towards crisper, cleaner writing. My course study in creative writing also allows me to guide students towards producing polished writing that is not just acceptable, but exceptional. The bulk of my experience is with high school juniors, seniors, and undergraduate students. I have also assisted with graduate school application essays, with a perfect success rate. (Those that I assisted were accepted into first choice programs.) I am available to tutor in the following subjects: English Composition, English Literature, Creative Writing, Psychology, and Sociology.
