After graduating with a B.A. in English, I worked for several years as a business writer and editor before deciding to become certified as an elementary teacher (K-8). Although new to WyzAnt, I have spent years tutoring elementary students who are struggling with reading, writing, math and study skills.
Learning to read is one of the most important skills learned in elementary school. I have helped young students develop and strengthen key literacy concepts such as phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension by teaching direct and explicit reading skills and strategies. As students become better readers, academic performance in all subjects will improve.
My particular area of expertise is writing, and I enjoy helping young writers master their craft by teaching the six effective traits of writing - ideas, organization, voice, sentence fluency, word choice and conventions. Since writing is a process, I always begin my lessons by directly modeling a particular skill or strategy.
I find that many young students who are struggling in Math have not mastered the basic skills needed to move on to more advanced concepts. When working with these students, I often use games and activities that stimulate their interest while improving the speed with which they are able to recall basic math facts. Older students often benefit by learning a variety of different methods to solve mathematical problems, and then selecting the approach they are most comfortable with.
As an experienced tutor, I understand that creating a fun and exciting learning environment is key to helping children learn. You will find me to be a friendly, warm and encouraging teacher who is passionate about helping your child learn and succeed in school!
