Marvin's Responses in WyzAnt Answers

AB and AC are tangents to circle O, and OC= 5X. find OC.

AB= 14+4X

AC= 19-6x

Making clear OC is just the radius its not the whole diameter.

Help me please! I don't know what to do after I make equal the two tangents (I know they are congruent) so I did 14+4x=19-6x and I got x=1/2

Marvin's Answer:

This is scientific notation:  A number multiplied by ten to a power.  Moreover, It is Standard Scientific Notation: the number in front is > or = to 1 and <10

How do you factor an equation like ax^2+bx+c if the a is negative and there is no c?

I know how to graph these kinds of equations with parabolas but cannot figure out how to find the factored, vertex, and standard forms of these equations.

Marvin's Answer:

Don't get confused by the fact that a is negative and c=0.  This is standard factoring.

ax^2+bx+c = (ax+b)(x)     Remember: c=0

(X-2)/3+(X-2)/4=7/24

PLEASE SHOW ME THE STEPS TO SOLVE THIS EQUATION. I KNOW THE ANSWER IS X=5/2

Marvin's Answer:

If someone tells you that the answer is x=5/2 then they should be able to show you how to get that answer.  My answer is different.

(x-2)/3 + (x-2)/4 = 7/24  I approach this by expressing everything as 24ths.  Thus I must multiply the first term by 8/8 and the second term by 6/6.  Note that 8/8 = 1  and 6/6 = 1

{(x-2)/3} {8/8} + {(x-2)/4} {6/6} = 7/24

{8(x-2)}/(3)(8) + {6(x-2)}/(4)(6) = 7/24

{8x-16}/24 + {6x-12}/24 = 7/24  now we are adding 24ths and the numerators must add

8x-16+6x-12 = 7

14x -28 = 7  add 28 to both sides

14x = 35  divide both sides by 14

x = 35/14  divide top and bottom by 7

x = 5/2
