My name is Armisey S. and I am an experienced arts educator and mentor for students wanting to expand their artistic skills in painting, drawing, printmaking, collage and portfolio development. My more than 20 years of experience include working with numerous youth and adults in refining their skills, taking them to the next level in their academic and professional careers. Some of my students have gone on to Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, Fashion Institute of Technology, School of Visual Arts and Montclair State University. I have mentored High School seniors in a program in Newark, New Jersey for two years. This program affords High School students the opportunity to work with a professional artist for six weeks and produce a viable art work for exhibition at the end of the mentoring cycle. I have also worked with university students to develop a large-scale mural in Newark, New Jersey.

My tutoring pedagogy is rigorous, but it's fun to engender a positive response and therefore product from my students. I train with and eye toward repetition and completing a series of technical exercises that will further develop skills and artistic style. Throughout the sessions, I make it my point to introduce or reinforce the historical components of art, asking students to write short observations about a selected artwork. This method helps the student interested in attending art school to think more critically about art and its history.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

My drawing qualifications are extensive relative to my training at Parsons School of Design. I majored in Illustration, thereby necessitating strong drawing skills. My drawing training and expertise include: seeing edges, working with angles, refining proportion and relationships, utilizing shading, positive and negative space, drawing expressively, drawing with color and drawing with use of pattern and various textures. I have a proven record of tutoring and mentoring students throughout my professional career(HMI, Integrity House, City Without Walls, Newark School of the Arts, Newark Arts Council, City Murals Program and private lessons) My approach includes building upon fundamental elements of drawing/composition and eventually increasing the complexity of drawing assignments to reach short and long-term goals for my students.

Painting

My painting qualifications are extensive relative to my training at Parsons School of Design. I majored in Illustration, thereby necessitating strong painting techniques. My painting training and expertise include: pen and watercolor, water soluble ink with a wet brush, gauche/acrylic and 2d design, color theory, layering paint, blending colors (oil and acrylic), covering the canvas (or watercolor paper), blocking, under-painting, and Alla Prima.
To develop upon the skills of a burgeoning or established painter, I first review their current work and encourage a discussion related to the technical and creative aspects of their paintings. From this point, I then begin to discuss the ways with which the student and I can work on shared goals, objectives and a robust course of action which will produce the desired short-term and long-term results.
