UPDATE, May, 2013: I am BOOKED for the Summer of 2013! The next available slots will be after the October test, and those will most likely be reserved by Labor Day.
About me: I earned my BA in English from the University of Delaware in 1987, tutored SAT prep for Huntington Learning Center, and have been an independent tutor since 2006. Weekdays, I teach an academically-accelerated home-schooler; weeknights and Saturdays, I teach SAT students in and around Morris County.
I scored in the 98th percentile on the May, 2008 SAT, with a perfect 800 in Writing. This was a significant improvement over the SAT I took as a high school student...in 1983. A valid question to ask any tutor is "When did you last take a real SAT?" Real, current testing experience makes a difference.
About SAT prep: The way you take a history or biology test is very different from the way you take a standardized test. With my test prep, you will learn:
How to chop overly dense reading comp passages down to size
How to decipher one and two-blank sentence completion questions when the answers are words you've never seen
How to use timing and skipping to your advantage
What elements must go into an SAT essay to score a 6 instead of a 2
Effective methods for increasing your vocabulary skills without memorizing huge word lists
What the SAT math sections are really testing (it's not always math)
How to see the hidden hints in many math diagrams and equations
Strategies to combat test anxiety
Some of my students score 2300, some hope to just break 1500, but EVERY student can improve his or her standardized test taking skills. Your success is the distance traveled from the first diagnostic score to the last full practice score. If your testing confidence improves along the way, we've done the right things.
About 90% of my clients come from referrals, so my schedule can fill up rather quickly. Full prep for the SAT usually takes 10 to 12 weekly sessions, so it's best to start 3+ months before your planned test date. Summer students often do two sessions per week to finish before September, but I don't recommend such a schedule during the school year.
