Hi! My name is Jennifer, and I received my Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, and English degrees from Monmouth University in May of 2012. I have three years of experience working with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. I have also substituted in 1st through 5th grade as well as tutored children in lower elementary grades previously.

My preferred method of tutoring is student-centered and hands-on. For Math, I try to supply (or make) manipulatives to support the learning process. I have found that the "I do, we do, you do" method works really well with students struggling in this content area. My field of expertise, so to speak, is Language Arts Literacy, which includes reading, grammar, spelling, and fluency. Lastly, I believe learning should be fun, so I try to plan my sessions around the student's interests if possible!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I'm qualified to tutor students in elementary school because I am certified in this area as well as certified to teach English. I have numerous experiences working directly with young children over the span of 6 years. I am currently substituting in elementary schools in my area and have worked one-on-one with elementary students.

Elementary Math

I'm qualified to teach elementary math because I have an abundance of prior experience. I completed my student teaching experience in a third grade inclusion classroom, substitute in elementary school classrooms, and have privately tutored elementary students in Math. In addition, I have taken three college-level math courses on how to teach Math to elementary students.

English

I'm qualified to teach English because I have an abundance of prior experience. I completed my student teaching experience in a third grade inclusion classroom, substitute in elementary school classrooms, and have privately tutored elementary students in Reading/Language Arts Literacy. In addition, I have taken over 30 college credits in the English content area and am continuing to do so by taking Master's courses.

Grammar

I'm qualified to tutor students in grammar because I have an abundance of prior experience. I completed my student teaching experience in a third grade inclusion classroom, substitute in elementary school classrooms, and have privately tutored elementary students to enhance their writing. In addition, I have taken over 30 college credits in the English content area and am continuing to do so by taking Master's courses. I have taken two different college courses on teaching writing to elementary students, which includes grammar.

Literature

I'm qualified to teach English because I have an abundance of prior experience. I completed my student teaching experience in a third grade inclusion classroom, substitute in elementary school classrooms, and have privately tutored elementary students in Reading/Language Arts Literacy. In addition, I have taken over 30 college credits in the English content area and am continuing to do so by taking Master's courses to become a Reading Specialist.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have been using Microsoft PowerPoint since my freshman year of college, and have become very familiar with creating presentations for different audiences. I love to be creative and add visually appealing font, colors, pictures, and animations. There are so many options to choose from, and it's a great way to showcase your knowledge for a group of people.

Microsoft Word

I've been using Microsoft Word since middle school, so I have about ten years of experience working with this word processor. I've typed entirely too many papers to count and feel confident showing others how to effectively use it as well.

Proofreading

I minored in English during my four undergraduate years at Monmouth University.

Many of my friends and colleagues will even ask me to proofread their work because it's second nature to me.

Reading

I'm qualified to teach Reading because I have an abundance of prior experience.

Spanish

I've taken six years of Spanish from middle school through high school and one college course. These levels of Spanish are much more difficult than elementary Spanish, which I'm knowledgeable of. I do not have any experience teaching Spanish, but I can apply the teaching skills that I have been taught and successfully used to help improve your child's understanding of Spanish.

Spelling

In regards to spelling, some people are really good spellers and others are thankful for spell-check. I've always prided myself on being a strong speller, and was one of those students who looked forward to spelling tests because they were easy for me. There are numerous tricks for teaching a person how to spell, especially young children just learning to read and write, and I find it enjoyable to tutor others in this area.

Writing

I minored in English during my four undergraduate years at Monmouth University, and thus became a strong, expressive writer. As well, I have a lot of knowledge and direct experience working with children, so I understand many of their common mistakes as well as how to help them become stronger writers. I've taken two different courses on teaching writing to elementary students, so I've gained much experience picking up on the strengths and weaknesses of a writer, and how to help that student improve their writing skills.
