Hi! My name is Jennifer, and I received my Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education degrees from Monmouth University in May of 2012. Following graduation, I began substituting in various elementary schools to gain more experience working with students. I'm very passionate about the teaching and learning process, and therefore have continued my education to obtain my Master's. (As an undergraduate, I focused on English as my content area of choice because I find the language fascinating. This knowledge coupled with my experience working one-on-one with students during my 100+ hours of field experience in over 7 classrooms led to me opting to pursue my education to become a Reading Specialist.) Currently, I'm mid-way through my Master's degree, and want to continue working with students, and helping them reach their full potentials.
In addition, I have worked alongside my cooperating teacher during student teaching to tutor over 20 students in grades 2 through 5. This arrangement was called Homework Club, and we each assisted students in completing their homework and answering questions regarding subjects that may have been causing them difficulty. This includes all elementary subjects, but especially Math and Reading. I've also had three months experience doing private tutoring, which increased my knowledge on how different students learn best.
My preferred method of tutoring is student-centered and hands-on. For Math, I try to supply (or make) manipulatives to support the learning process. I have found that the "I do, we do, you do" method works really well with students struggling in this content area. My field of expertise, so to speak, is Language Arts Literacy, which includes reading, grammar, spelling, and fluency. Lastly, I believe learning should be fun, so I try to plan my sessions around the student's interests if possible!
