Although I spent most of my career in IT on Wall Street, I don't remember a time when I didn't tutor. As "fifth from the top" in a family of eleven children, I starting tutoring my younger siblings at a very early age. The first official tutoring job I had with a student outside of my family was with a fourth grader when I was in the seventh grade. I tutored children sporadically throughout high school and college. In my undergraduate program at NYU, I majored in Computer Science after spending my first two years as a Pre-Med student. In my junior year, when I switched to pursue a Computer Science major, I worked as a student computer consultant, helping students with their computer science assignments at both NYU and Baruch College Computer Centers. I think one of my proudest tutoring moments was, while I was in my senior year at NYU and still working at the computer centers of NYU and Baruch, I also taught the six-year-old son of one of NYU's professors how to program in the BASIC programming language on a PC. It involved first successfully teaching him some pre-algebra concepts. I wonder to this day what that child, who actually learned to program at 6, is doing today in life.
In my last job as a Vice President in IT at a NYC Investment Bank, I read to/with nearby elementary students on my lunch hour in the Everybody Wins reading program my company participated in for several years. Also, when I completed my coursework towards a master's degree in Computer Science at NYU Courant Institute Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, I started teaching first, third and/or sixth graders religious education. I taught for nine years for my R.C. Church in Brooklyn, NY. When I left my Wall St. job upon having my son, who is now 8, I stopped teaching in Brooklyn because I had also moved to Morganville, NJ. I worked with my son, of course, though, and resumed teaching CCD three years ago at a local R.C. Church. A fun moment for me a few years back was teaching some calculus concepts to my then ten-year old stepson and to see his face light up when he was really "getting it."
I am patient, will adjust my teaching methods to the individual needs of the particular student and specialize in math and computer science. I have also recently worked with many GRE students. I look forward to the opportunity to help you or your child not only succeed in school but enjoy it as well!
I am an IT Professional with over 18 years of industry work experience. I have held positions in Technology ranging from C and C++ Development to Unix systems programming, to integration engineering, to managing diverse heterogeneous computing environments in the Research, Education and Financial Industries. I received my B.S. in Computer Science from NYU in 1984, and completed all coursework towards a M.S. in Computer Science from NYU GSAS.
I received my B.S. in Computer Science from NYU in 1984, and completed all coursework towards a M.S. in Computer Science from NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. I tutored in Computer Science courses all through college. I completed courses in all aspects of Computer Science including Computer Vision, Robotics, Data Communications, Database, Programming Languages, Operating Systems, and Computer Architecture. In my Masters program, I also worked on a Robotics Independent Study project with Professor Ken Perlin, an Acadamy Award Winner. At the time I was completing my Masters courses, I was working at Philips Research Laboratory as a programmer and then network and systems administrator which included providing written manuals on the use of the computer systems there; then I worked at NYU managing the Computing Resources for the Math and Computer Science Departments there; and then I also worked at a non-profit Pension Fund. Afterwards, I worked in all aspects of technology at an investment bank for 11 years which depended on my general Computer Science knowledge, especially in the area of understanding the requirements for electronic trading systems to run within our complex secure computing environment. My experience is vast.I know more computer languages and understand more operating systems than I can list here. I am qualified to tutor in Computer Science.
Excellent Tutor!!! — 7/25/13 - My son has been extremely fortunate to be tutored by Cecilia. As a result of these sessions, he has quickly grasped the fairly complicated subject matter. This is due in no small part to Cecilia's knowledge and patience. She is very intelligent and possesses the ability to present complex ideas and information in terms that are understandable. She's also very accommodating, and she will ...
