Most students consider me "a good teacher." I consider myself a perpetual student, learning much from the students with whom I share knowledge. I have tremendous respect for the student-teacher learning process and just as much respect for the knowledge shared during tutoring--often the deepest learning.

Currently, I teach English and Social Sciences at Hudson County Community College. Courses that I teach include English Composition, Reading, Journalism, Academic Foundations, and some favorites, Women's Studies, Literature, Public Speaking and Cultures and Values. I am also a tutor/mentor in the College Writing Center.

However, subject matter area is only one aspect of the learning process. As a master's degree level Holistic Health Practitioner, I have come to learn that we are more than our knowledge; we are complex beings whose wellness impacts all functions. Stress reduction, meditation, wellness therapies (including writing and journaling) can also be used to help improve outcome and wellness. It is difficult to learn a subject that is not a favorite or enhance knowledge in a preferred learning area when students do not feel well.

I am results oriented. Students who enroll in my college courses consistently achieve minimum or better departmental scores if exit exams are required, possess knowledge and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in higher level courses and love to learn.

English

College instructor, English and Social Sciences. Special areas include Writing, Cultures and Values, Women's Studies, Philosophy and Journalism. Method is contemporary Socratic.

Grammar

Grammar instruction is key in my work as an instructor or English and Humanities. I teach grammar through students' writing, not through rote exercises, except when required (ESL learners, perhaps. As a freelance writer and college newspaper faculty advisor, knowledge and facility with grammar is also required.

Literature

I teach literature on the college level. Courses include: Introduction to Literature, Survey of American Literature, Women in Literature. However, more important, I read and feel the literature.

Proofreading

Ads a former newspaper reporter and still writer and college student newspaper faculty advisor, editing and proofreading are paramount in the creative process as well as the academic process.

Public Speaking

Public speaking credentials start with teaching college courses, including Public Speaking. Other credentials include speaking to small and large groups on Holistic Wellness, Stress Reduction, Healing after the diagnosis of Cancer, and Eastern/Western Integrative Medical Approaches to Wellness. Related credentials include years of co-directing a college forensics (speech team.

Particularly relevant in this area is the ability to use holistic healing therapies including breathing exercises, guided imagery, meditation and stress reduction to ease the distress caused by the assignment of speaking in public.

Reading

I have taught reading on the developmental and college level for many years. I have also taught GED and SAT reading prep. Reading teaching stresses comprehension, synthesis, and critical thinking. Hopefully, enjoyment of reading becomes a component as students feel more comfortable and confident with sustained reading.

SAT Writing

SAT writing success involves competence, strategy, and a willingness to practice these skills. SAT writing success also involves focus, a feeling of competence and the ability to relax and open the mind, even in the pressured SAT test atmosphere.

I can help with all areas. I hold a masters degree in holistic health studies, in addition to graduate work in English and extensive experience teaching writing and English on the college level.

Study Skills

I have taught college level study skills and first year experience courses for many years. I was among those who developed a pilot freshman retention course at Upsala College in the 1980s. Although college students will probably not request study skills as an area of potential tutoring, the skills set is the same regardless of grade level.

Vocabulary

As a writer, former reporter, and college instructor of English and social sciences, vocabulary competence is an essential part of what I teach. Competence is far more than knowing a new word--it includes meaning, usage, and appropriate application.

Writing

More than just the subject matters when tutoring and teaching writing. As a college English instructor, I stress content, organization, and willingness to participate in the writing process as well as the required attention to grammar and format.

If someone has an inherent fear of writing or continual negative thoughts about writing, it can affect the writing process and what may be a relatively simple assignment becomes more complicated. With focus and commitment to the process, writing can become easier, perhaps even joyful.

College courses that I teach include all levels of writing, research, journalism, and ethics.
