Hello!

My name is Brian, and I am a non-traditional student (30) seeking a degree in education. I signed up for WyzAnt because I want to gain experience teaching.

I have done many different things before I re-entered college. I studied music theory (CCM), Music and Film Production, Guitar / Bass Guitar / and Drums, and the French language (I can teach beginners to converse effectively to do business or travel to a francophone country), also, English basics (phonetics, writing, reading, analysis)

Each of the things I have listed, I have many years experience doing and to some small extent -- teaching. I would like to broaden my horizons while acquiring my degree so when I do begin teaching humanities and English as a second language, I will be more prepared. Let's not forget that this is a win-win for us both! Each of us love to learn and to share information so really there is nothing to lose! I like to maintain a positive atmosphere, I am friendly, courteous, and professional and I hope that you will be as well. I look forward to speaking with you and helping you help me to help you.

Composition (Music)

My roots in music come from far before my birth. My father was a music major when he was younger than I am now. The day I was brought home from the hospital, I was already surrounded by music. My father would impart what he knew onto me almost daily as fathers are wont to do. I have been writing my own music since I was barely able to talk. I am by no means a master musician, but I am very good at recognizing musical devices, and the reasons behind using them (also how to use them ironically or contrary to their original "purpose").

I am very passionate in thinking about WHY musicians do what they do when they construct songs. It is perhaps the thing I think about above everything else, and I have the education to back up my theories.

Drums

Drums are the first instrument I learned how to play. My father majored in percussion at college, and I have been playing drums for most of my life. I did rebel in my teenage years to play guitar, so I'm not the best drummer in the world, but I do know what it takes to make someone a great drummer. I am familiar with rudiments and how to read lesson books. I believe that I can be a very positive influence on an aspiring musician.

Ear Training

Learning songs by ear has been what sets me apart for the entirety of my life. I never learned how to sight read effectively (as far as me being the one playing), however, I could always keep up or surpass my fellow students by listening and learning by ear. Sometimes this skill would get me in trouble with teachers who could clearly see that I was not sight-reading the music, but rather playing from memory and my ear. I have taken aural-comprehension in college, and I believe that I can help someone who wants to learn the skill.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently attending college under a liberal arts degree in the hopes that I will become a humanities teacher after transferring to another school under a more specific major. My interests are wide and varied and while attending school I spend a good amount of my spare time self-educating. I love to learn, and when you love to learn, it is easier to get children excited about learning. It's all about attitude, if I did not honestly love to learn and teach, it would be impossible to get a child to WANT to learn. If your child needs help, it would help all parties involved to give me a chance. Your child needs tutoring, and I want the experience.

English

In my college career, all of my teachers have commented on how my writing skills have been above most of the other students. I have written many A papers throughout my education and I am confident that I can help my students improve their writing and communication.

General Music

I will give a short background of my musical background.

My father, when he was younger than I am now, was a music major in college. As soon as I was brought home from the hospital, my life began revolving around music. The hows and whys of music were talked about constantly. In my teenage years I, like we all do, branched out in my musical taste. Like a literature aficionado analyzing the written word, I am always analyzing my beloved vibrating air molecules. I have education in music theory, I have played music all of my life, and to relax I listen to and play music.

Grammar

Grammar is a strange beast indeed. What may be acceptable in one instance is unacceptable in others, it really depends on the audience. I have experience with writing consultations for films as well as successful academic writings in college. It is my goal to teach English and I have a firm grasp of its grammar. I love language and I would enjoy aiding someone improve, it will change your life!

Guitar

Guitar is my instrument of choice. I have been playing guitar for over a decade and I have taught many people and have instilled a passion for it that continues to this day. A few of my students are now better than me! I live to share my love for music through the guitar with other people. I am educated in musical theory.

Phonics

In grade school, I had a lisp. I attended speech therapy for many years until it was improved. All the while I developed a love for foreign languages, and through them, a love for English. Now, I am a liberal arts major with an Anthropology leaning, hoping to one day teach humanities. I have the ear of a trained musician (because I am one) and I apply it to language.

My goals are to not only teach humanities, but also English as a second language. I am taking both French and German in school, and in my spare time I research bits and pieces of other world languages. I love language. I believe with my ear and my sincere interest, I can be a great help to someone who needs it phonetically.

Photography

I have been working in photography for five years now. I have a keen artistic eye, and I am versed in the technical aspects of it. My main focus has generally been video production, but almost all of the theory and techniques are the same. If you are a beginner, I would be glad to help you find yourself through photography. It is an exciting medium that I have a passion for, and if I can help someone pursue it, I would be very happy.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking is the #1 fear in America, just above death. The odd thing is, I very much understand. Not so long ago I was cripplingly shy. Now, I have more confidence and I am more able to forge personal and business relationships. Also, this may sound trite, but I have a great passion for stand-up comedy. I do not participate (yet), but I watch it, I analyze it, I read interviews by my favorite performers about what it takes to try and be funny in front of theaters full of people.

I can coach you to speak in front of people effectively. Under my tutelage, your confidence will grow and new doors will open up for you. I have helped a few people find themselves this way, maybe I can help you too.

Songwriting

Study Skills

In high school and my first attempt at college, I was a terrible student. I went out into the real world as a carpenter and tradesman and over the years I changed dramatically. Now, with the economy the way it is, I am back in school as an A student and I owe it all to my change in study habits. Nothing is better than being prepared no matter what you're doing, and studying is simply being prepared for class, tests, and life.

It is my hope to become a teacher and I am looking to gain experience by tutoring through WyzAnt. The study skills I have developed and studied, I believe can be of great usefulness to both younger and older students.

Video Production

I have spent the last five years working my way from intern to director / producer and I've loved every minute of it. I still try to intern and volunteer just for fun! Video production is very hard work, but also very rewarding. I have played all the parts of the process from pre-production, to production, to post-production.

I have a resume in video and audio production available upon request. WyzAnt says specifically that I should not post it on their site, however, I will send it to prospective students if they want.

From big budget productions to shoe-string volunteer only student films I have been a part of them all. I have traveled the world shooting and editing video and I would love to share my knowledge and experience with someone who is truly wanting to learn.
