Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught middle and high school French and English for 20 years, and have helped many students who have difficulty focusing and remaining on task because of an ADD/ADHD classification. I completed a series of seminars on special needs accommodations, specifically for ADD/ADHD and autism to maintain my NJ State Teacher certification. In addition, my own son has ADHD; he struggled in middle school, but I was able to help him master some effective coping skills, and he enjoyed his years in high school. A few of the coping skills I employ with my ADD/ADHD students are: to split a long assignment into two or three shorter assignments, each with a well-defined beginning and end, and to allow adequate time to finish each section; to schedule breaks to work on a different task in order to circumvent frustration; to print out frequent rough drafts so that the student feels a sense of accomplishment and becomes invested in the completion of the assignment. Students with ADHD also benefit from the subtle repetition of finger/hand movements which help can help them stay physically calm and mentally focused.

English

English lessons present an overview of the grammatical structure of the English language to help students, through example and instruction, to develop an understanding of and ability to use correctly:

• subjects and predicates in complete sentences;
• kinds and forms of nouns, pronouns, and verbs;
• forms of adjectives and adverbs to add definition and interest to their sentences;
• prepositions, prepositional phrases, conjunctions, and interjections;
• verbals, such as participles, participial phrases, gerunds and gerund phrases, infinitives and infinitive phrases;
• clauses and complex sentences;
• verb tenses, forms and moods and subject-verb agreement;
• words and phrases that often present usage problems;
• standard rules of capitalization and punctuation; and
• short sentences combined into longer, more complex ones in order to give their writing style greater clarity of thought and
variety.

ESL/ESOL

I am certified in the State of NJ to teach high school French and English; my training in teaching strategies for all four language skill is extensive and current. In addition, I have experience teaching elementary foreign language; I use these strategies and manipulatives to advance, reinforce, and assess my students' progress rather than paper and pencil assessments which reduce the target language to a test.

French

My French course is designed to further develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, as well as your knowledge of Francophone literature and cultures, through the use of audio tapes, videos, grammar exercises, computer software and authentic reading materials. Oral proficiency and precise expression are reinforced, and emphasis is placed on building vocabulary and grammar skills at your level. Communicative and Constructive techniques are used to master the language. The sessions are conducted primarily in French and you will be expected to speak in French as much as possible to the best of his/her ability.

Grammar

Grammar lessons will present an overview of the grammatical structure of the English language to help students, through example and instruction, to develop an understanding of and ability to use correctly:

• subjects and predicates in complete sentences;
• kinds and forms of nouns, pronouns, and verbs;
• forms of adjectives and adverbs to add definition and interest to their sentences;

• words and phrases that often present usage problems;
• standard rules of capitalization and punctuation; and
• short sentences combined into longer, more complex ones in order to give their writing style greater clarity of thought and
variety.

Literature

The student will improve his/her reading comprehension and vocabulary skills by reading short works of fiction by American authors. We will explore literary traditions, authors’ style, and the elements of fiction therein, and complete reading comprehension questions, a study guide analysis, and a vocabulary list for each short story.

Reading

The main objective of my Reading course is improved reading comprehension skills. The basic elements of fiction are defined, discussed and identified in a selection of short stories, plays, and excerpts from novels, written by American authors during the 19th and 20th centuries. Careful study of common themes, conflicts and characterization in diverse settings, and a variety of plots, will guide the student to a better understanding of reading for content and to a greater appreciation of good writing.

SAT Reading

This course will prepare students for all question types found on the verbal component of SAT and ACT. We will focus on verbal refreshers and techniques aimed at relieving test-taking anxiety. Topics include sentence completions and reading comprehension for the reading section, grammar and essay writing for the writing section. Basic SAT test-taking strategies will be practiced and evaluated; also personal-best strategies will be implemented and compared for the best outcome.

Study Skills

Study Skills tutoring provides guidance for students who will benefit from organizational instruction and support in order to achieve success in their academic work. Students will be mentored in the following skills: time management, organization, short and long-range planning, outlining and note taking and note cards, active listening, research methods and test-taking strategies. Students will apply these skills to current assignments under my supervision and guidance. In addition, I will show students how to organize future assignments in folders on their computers and in the notebooks/binders they take to class.

TOEFL

I am a NJ State certified high school teacher of French and English. Over the years, I have taught many non-native speakers; and, when I was a student in France, I taught ESL to adults who needed to improve their English for business purposes; they were pleased with their progress under my tutelage. I am organized, goal-oriented, and possess a trove of resource materials to compliment different learning styles.

Vocabulary

I will help my student to improve his/her vocabulary skills by reading short works of fiction by American authors and general interest stories from Time and Newsweek magazines. We will identify words with which the student is unfamiliar, search for context clues for help with the meanng. Ultimately, we will find two definitions for the word in Websters dictionary and write two sentences using the word correctly. We will keep a running list of words and include the College Board SAT list of words-you-should-learn-for-the-college board.

I will create several matching, few fill-in with a word bank, and use-the-word in a sentences assessments, then we will take lessons from the students most recent vocab book, and, if possible, preview next year's vocab words.

Our goal will to create a flashcard for every word you at one time did not know, or thought you did not know. We will get through those cards at every session until you know them all cold, and have a good foundation of how to suss out the meaning of an unknown word by using Greek and Latin derivations and context clues.

Writing

A basic writing course provides extensive practice in the fundamentals of sentence structure and editing skills, focusing on paragraph and essay development. Furthermore, a systematic expansion of students’ English vocabulary, including idioms, academic vocabulary, and course content vocabulary, through critical reading and writing about short works of fiction provides students with the strategies necessary to effectively distinguish among main ideas, supporting statements or examples, and details, in assigned as well as personal writings.
