I am well versed in approaches to teaching grammar, vocabulary, and writing; I have earned a degree in English and secondary education through The College of New Jersey and have taught middle school Language Arts. I tutored for a couple months at Fisher Middle School as well as with a local tutoring center in Piscataway, NJ. Over the course of my teaching experiences, I have collated a number of resources and self-constructed lessons to address the needs of a range of students.
My teaching style is very student-centered, utilizing methods in which students learn through creation or replication of model texts or through the application of words and concepts, rather than the mere memorization of them.
*Vocabulary instruction is dependent upon the level of the student and the intentions of vocabulary study. I either focus on the meaning of word parts or utilize more creative means of learning words if studying for a test.
*Writing instruction is entirely driven by the student's strengths and weaknesses, as evaluated through the lens of the six-traits of writing. Conferencing, mini-lessons, student application of lessons, and authentic writing exercises are essential.
*Grammar instruction, also determined by the student's own knowledge, is aided by examples, counter-examples, creative mnemonic devices, and the application of correct grammar in writing.
I can apply myself to tutoring a student with a specific writing or Language Arts assignment, as a supplement to the units being taught in a student's class, or as a supplement geared, instead, towards the improvements a student needs, as seen fit by my own assessments, a parent's assessment, or one's own assessment.
I am open to meeting at libraries/schools periodically or having weekly tutoring scheduled. I am also open to group lessons and have experience working with multiple students at a time.
