I have been tutoring students for the past 10 years, and currently teach 9th Grade English full time in New Jersey. For a while I wasn't sure if I wanted to become a Math or English teacher, and I greatly enjoy learning/teaching both subjects. Ultimately, I decided to pursue English, since reading is my passion. However, I really enjoy math, especially Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Middle School Math.
As a tutor at The College of New Jersey (the former Trenton State) I became a Master Tutor for Tutoring over 100 hours. By the time I graduated in May 2011, I accrued over 200 tutoring hours. For three semesters at TCNJ I took courses on tutoring to help me become an experienced tutor. At the TCNJ Tutoring Center, I would tutor writing, Literature, linguistics, language, and Math for Liberal Arts Majors. As an English Secondary Education major, I took classes on how to teach reading and writing.
I love reading Young Adult Literature, and share that love of literature with my current students in a variety of ways, constantly buying new books for my classroom and providing reading recommendations. My students joke that I have a better collection of books for teens and young adults than their public library. Some of my favorite authors include Suzanne Collins, Markus Zusak, Veronica Roth, J.K. Rowling, and Laurie Halse Anderson.
Thank you for considering me!
Throughout my career as a student and teacher I have read hundreds of books, both classic and contemporary. I constantly try to improve my knowledge of Literature, reading in my spare time and encouraging my students to read in class at the start of each period.
As a tutor at The College of New Jersey, proofreading was a big focus of my work when students would come to the Tutoring Center. For the most part, students ideas were well-developed but their abilities to use specific examples, rearrange sentences, use transitions, and catch grammar mistakes needed help and encouragement.
Students need to enjoy reading and be able to determine the main idea in a text that they read. I enjoy helping students identify literary elements and helping them comprehend a difficult text by implementing reading strategies.
Instead of always clicking the "thesaurus" button on their computers, I encourage my students to learn new vocabulary words and practice them in their writing. To help students define new words, I gave them words in context and help them use context clues to determine the meanings of the unfamiliar words.
Reading and writing go hand-in-hand. No matter what career path a student follows, writing skills will be necessary for life. Therefore, I enjoy helping students plan their ideas, write well-developed responses, and use textual support where applicable to support their ideas. I also like to help students self-edit and self-revise their work, because they won't always have a teacher around to help them.
