I am a freelance sign language interpreter with a strong medical background and experience teaching on a high school
level. I have taught English in the past, but more recently tutored beginning Sign Language students who wished to master the language sufficiently enough to be accepted into an Interpreter Training Program. I have 2 degrees - a BA in English from St. Joseph's University and an AA degree in Interpreting from Camden County College. I also have a functional understanding of the grammar application for both languages which is essential to proper execution of Sign Language.

I am glad I was able to get Maria to help me out with my ASL IV lessons because I was really struggling. She is really cool and takes her time showing me what I need to do for my assignments. I wish I had gotten in touch with her in the beginning of the term. Never the less, Maria is a great tutor who knows what she is doing and has a lot of patience instructing and tutoring others. Thanks for all your support.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a sign language interpreter for approximately 4 years. I have a BA in English and an AA in interpreting (applies sciences). I passed the initial proficiency test which was required to enter the interpreting program and I successfully completed the ITP program requirements to become an interpreter. In 2009 I passed the Knowledge portion of the National Interpreters Certification test (NIC). I am now Pre-certified and eligible to take the Performance and Interview portion of the NIC which I plan to do the summer of 2013. I currently interpret in a variety of venues: medical, educational, mental health and business.
