I am a freelance sign language interpreter with a strong medical background and experience teaching on a high school
level. I have taught English in the past, but more recently tutored beginning Sign Language students who wished to master the language sufficiently enough to be accepted into an Interpreter Training Program. I have 2 degrees - a BA in English from St. Joseph's University and an AA degree in Interpreting from Camden County College. I also have a functional understanding of the grammar application for both languages which is essential to proper execution of Sign Language.

I believe my academic, teaching and practical experiences enable me to help any student who is struggling with their classes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sign Language

I have been a sign language interpreter for approximately 4 years. I have a BA in English and an AA in interpreting (applies sciences). I passed the initial proficiency test which was required to enter the interpreting program and I successfully completed the ITP program requirements to become an interpreter. In 2009 I passed the Knowledge portion of the National Interpreters Certification test (NIC). I am now Pre-certified and eligible to take the Performance and Interview portion of the NIC which I plan to do the summer of 2013. I currently interpret in a variety of venues: medical, educational, mental health and business.

ASL IV Tutor Support — I am glad I was able to get Maria to help me out with my ASL IV lessons because I was really struggling. She is really cool and takes her time showing me what I need to do for my assignments. I wish I had gotten in touch with her in the beginning of the term. Never the less, Maria is a great tutor who knows what she is doing and has a lot of patience instructing and tutoring others. Thanks for all ...
