As a Reading Specialist I can help students with reading from ages pre-school to adult. I have sixteen years of experience as an elementary/middle school teacher, I enjoy working with students in their academic areas and helping to enhance their strengths and working on their weaknesses. I stress increasing vocabulary and decoding skills, reading comprehension and fluency. As a Reading Specialist I will work with students in diagnosing their reading difficulties and/or improving their reading skills in both the narrative and the content areas.

I also work closely with students to help them in writing organization and work with them toward developing five paragraph essays as well as research papers. I stress the importance of planning the paper and then breaking each component of the paper into manageable segments to include a proper opening, body and closing.

I look forward to helping you.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am an experienced teacher having taught for 14 years in grades 5th through 8th and up to graduate students in college. I teach reading, vocabulary, and writing in various formats. I teach students the writing process, from brain storming to the final written work. My students have improved in their writing with my direct instruction and many of them have won local essay contests and some have gone on to be valedictorians of their high school and some students have received full scholarships to college. I'm looking forward to helping your child improve their writing skills.

English

Although English can be confusing for people, it is my favorite subject and I look forward to teaching it. We will break down parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation and word choice when writing. We will work on writing essays and reports. In addition we will review reading strategies to improve comprehension. I am looking forward to helping you.

Phonics

I have taught English for over 15 years as well as spelling and decoding skills. I have taught Latin and Greek roots as well helping students learn the pronunciation and meaning of words. In addition I have tutored students in grades K -3 phonics when instructing them in reading fluency and comprehension. We work on identifying word parts and prefixes and suffixes, and blending sounds in order to phonetically pronounce words correctly

Reading

As a Reading Specialist I concentrate on determining your child's strengths and weaknesses when planning tutoring sessions to help them improve their reading. I focus on high interest material to engage your child in reading, decoding vocabulary words, increasing vocabulary skills, improving fluency and comprehension. Reading strategies such as focusing on inferential skills and critical thinking skills are stressed during reading as well as cause and effect, identifying main ideas, compare and contrast info, and responding to literature and non fiction through various writing activities.

Social Studies

As a classroom teacher for many years, I taught middle school social studies to sixth, seventh and eighth graders in World history and American history. In addition, I have tutored high school students in these subjects. I have always had a love of history and have taken many vacation and trips to historical sites, battlefields, museums, and presidential libraries to learn interesting facts that I can incorporate into my lessons.

Study Skills

As a classroom teacher with many years experience, one of the first lessons I taught every year in September was staying organized and effective study skills. I stressed the importance of study skills and how they could lead to academic success. I continued to model effective study skills with every assignment throughout the year. The skills I stressed were listening in class, having a planner to write down homework assignments, taking notes, using study guides effectively, outlining chapter notes and techniques for studying for tests and exams. In addition, I taught writing and research skills for various types of assignments. My personal motto was and still is "Plan your work and work your plan!" I have stressed study skills in many tutoring sessions as well.

Writing

Since writing is an integral part of language arts, it is important to understand that writing is a
process that begins with planning the work and continuing through the finish products. It is important to know how to write in various genres not only in English classes, but to take these skills to other course work, especially in the content courses, such as science, math and social studies. I have worked with many students over the years who were hesitant writers and went on to emerge as confident writers and some students' works went on to get published in anthologies. I will give you personal attention and help you become an improved writer.
