I am an experienced teacher who especially enjoys developing relationships with her students. I have certifications in elementary education, middle school math, and English as a second language. I am also a mother of three and have worked as a camp counselor in four different camps, teaching sports, cooking, and arts-n-crafts.
When teaching math, I use real-world examples and objects. I compare mathematical operations to money and food. Most students struggle in math because of weaknesses in basic facts. I explain mental math tricks to my students, and I show them self-study techniques. For elementary-aged students, I have a “goody bag” with objects like balls, stickers, yo-yos, and fancy pencils as a reward for hard work. I am impressed with students who work hard, and I encourage them to not worry about mistakes. I share real-life examples of successful people who have made many mistakes along the way.
When teaching grammar, I usually have my students write a short story and then help them to correct their own mistakes. I also use books that they are reading (or I bring my own) to show them grammar in action.
In the realm of public speaking, I have learned my craft through Toastmasters International and by making work-related presentations. I have many strategies to help learners, from organizing their thoughts to using vocal variety and gestures effectively.
