I began my teaching career next to the Mexican border, in Yuma, Arizona. As a first-year teacher there, I was presented with a classroom of twenty-four students. Out of the twenty-four, sixteen were Limited English Proficient (LEP), four were new to the country, and four were English Proficient. This was a challenge that provided me with the learning experience of a lifetime; leading to my fluency in the Spanish language, and a decision to pursue an advanced degree in English Language Learning. After five more years of experience as an ESL teacher and program coordinator in Las Vegas, I moved back to my home state of New Jersey. This is my ninth year as an ESL educator and tutor.

My approach to tutoring is extremely individualized in order to successfully meet each student’s needs. I provide customized tutoring where all students receive personalized programming, continuous monitoring and immediate feedback.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballet

I have been practicing ballet since I was 3 years old. At 9 years old, I joined a competitive dance team and won many awards for my performances. As I grew older, I got more and more involved in ballet. I completed Princeton Ballet School's Professional Training Program and began practicing and performing with the junior company. In time, I began performing with the American Repertory Ballet Company as well as the New Jersey Ballet Company in works such as The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty. Although I do not perform as much as I used to, I still practice ballet regularly and enjoy teaching it to others.

Dyslexia

I have been trained to use the Orton-Gillingham method, a multi-sensory approach that was specifically designed to remediate dyslexia. I implement the Orton-Gillingham method when I am teaching remedial reading to exceptional learners. I also use this approach when I am teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to newcomers.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated from Kean University with a B.A. in Elementary Education and Spanish in 2005. I now run a program and teach students at the elementary level.

ESL/ESOL

I have earned a master’s degree in English Language Learning as well as a superior rating on both the Oral Proficiency Interview and Writing Proficiency Test in English, satisfying the requirement to be defined as a highly qualified teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL).

Phonics

I have been teaching phonics to students of all ages (to beginning readers as well as to learners of English as a second language) for seven years. I prefer to use a phonics program called Phonics for Reading because it is research-based and proven to be effective.

Praxis

I am able to prepare students for the following Praxis teaching exams:

0014 - Elementary Education: Content Knowledge

0360 - English to Speakers of Other Languages

I earned a score of 151/200 on the Elementary Education: Content Knowledge Praxis exam (0014).

I earned a score of 600/990 (average performance range is between 570-720/990) on the English to Speakers of Other Languages Praxis exam (0360).

I am currently using a study guide to prepare for the Spanish Content Knowledge Praxis exam (0191) and am able to help others to prepare for exam 0191 as well.

Study Skills

I have been teaching students how to develop healthy study habits for over seven years.

I am able to teach students the following study skills:

* Finding the Right Study Space
* Time/Project Management
* Mind Mapping
* Note Taking
* Test Taking Strategies
* Using Acronyms
* Using Mnemonic Devices
* Chunking Information
* Studying with Multiple Sources
* Studying with Flash Cards
* Index (A Study System)
* A.S.P.I.R.E. (A Study System)

Track & Field

In college (2000-2004), I trained and competed with Kean University's Cross Country and Track & Field teams. After my first year of participation, I was named Most Valuable Player (2000). I still train and compete in road races each year.

Yoga

I have been practicing yoga for seven years.

Hi, Vanessa! All you'll need to do to find your answer is move the decimal point two places to the left because the exponent is 2 and it is negative. If you move the decimal point two places to the left, you arrive at the answer: .462. If the exponent was a positive 2, you would have moved the...

It generally takes at least 5-7 years to acquire fluency in English as a Second Language (ESL). The most significant variable in how long it takes to learn English is the amount of formal schooling students have received in their first language. If a student is well-educated in his or her primary language, the English language can be acquired more easily.
