Classically trained jazz artist tutors piano, voice, songwriting

The intention I have for each tutoring session with a student is to enjoy exploring piano, singing, songwriting, music theory, or music history, whatever we have agreed to work on together. I have decades of accumulated knowledge and experience that I am excited to share, and I always learn from my students as well. We start with a contract of mutual respect and commitment to practice and/or study, and come to the next session fully prepared to learn and grow.

Though discipline is required to learn music, I never lose sight of the creative place that music comes from. I like to end tutoring sessions with a few minutes of improvising or free discussion to finish on a fun note.

I started playing piano when I was six years old, and sang solos in my church choir from the age of ten. I began jazz piano lessons at age 15, and went on to get a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Masters in Music Education. I studied classical piano for fifteen years and classical voice for four years. I began songwriting in my 20's, and have performed as a jazz vocalist and pianist since the 1970's. I recorded and produced two CDs that are sold on CD Baby online.

Performing and teaching music has been the major joy of my life.

Music Theory

I took all the required Music Theory courses for my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Music. I also taught Music Theory at Ocean County College for two years. I enjoy teaching music theory very much, and consider it an essential part of learning an instrument or voice.

Composition (Music)

I have written 50 songs and piano compositions, several of which have been recorded and published. The four songs I wrote on my CD have been heard on radio stations worldwide. The years I studied Music Theory undergraduate and in graduate school gave me the tools to write music. I took more graduate courses in Composition at Rutgers University in 2003, and wrote a song cycle and a woodwind quartet.

General Music

I taught General Music for five years to first through eighth grades in both public and private schools. Classes included singing songs from all cultures, learning about melody, form, rhythm, movement, and the instruments of the orchestra. Students were also taught rhythmic notation and music reading. Music History

My major concentration getting my B.A. in Music at Hood College was Music History. I took all the Music History courses that Hood had to offer, and then took my last semester at the University of Minnesota so I could take a Music History course on African American music. I also took graduate Music History courses at the University of Michigan and at the University of Massachusetts, where I received my Masters degree in Music Education.

Piano

I began piano lessons at age 6, and studied classical lessons through my last year at Hood College. I began lessons in jazz piano at age 15, and studied that for two years. I was awarded a scholarship to study jazz piano with the Stan Kenton Orchestra summer workshop. I have performed in countless piano recitals, and have recorded two CDs with me playing piano and singing.

Voice (Music)

I sang in the church choir and elementary school, joining the All City Chorus at age 10. I took classical voice lessons in undergraduate and graduate college, and began singing jazz and pop with bands professionally at the age of 25. I won the award for Best Female Jazz vocalist in 1978, given to me by the International Association of Jazz Educators. My jazz band opened for the Mercer Ellington Orchestra, and I performed with the Stan Kenton Orchestra.

Songwriting

I have been writing songs since the 1970s, and have had one published and ten recorded.
I have attended many workshops on songwriting all over the country, the last one in August 2011 at Berklee College of Music in Boston. I continue to write, and would love to assist students in bringing forth their best melodies, accompaniment, and lyrics.
