My primary qualifications for my role as a tutor are (1) my many years of work experience from my job at New York University (NYU), and (2) my degree in mathematics and economics from Montclair State University in New Jersey where I was certified as a mathematics teacher.
I was employed by the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at NYU where I taught courses; tutored students; and installed, maintained, repaired, upgraded and programmed computers used by the staff and faculty.
A major part of my teaching duties at NYU involved writing and editing complex, detailed assignments for students. These assignments, some of which were more than 20 pages in length, provided students with step-by-step instructions in how to use computer programs such as Microsoft Excel and the SPSS statistical package for data analysis and research. In my assignments I specialized in explaining things thoroughly and completely, such that even students with no experience whatsoever with the statistical concepts or the relevant software usually had no trouble grasping the material and using the computer to successfully complete the assignments.
In the course of my NYU work I tutored students who had to write papers, dissertations and theses. I assisted such students not only with their statistical analysis, but also with their writing, which was often seriously deficient. An important part of this tutoring work thus involved serving as a proofreader/editor/thought-organizer/grammar-specialist.
I have particular expertise in the material covered in many standardized tests such as the SATs. Not only do I have a firm grasp of the required mathematical skills and the essential aspects of grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension, I have mastered a number of strategies for quickly determining the correct answer to the multiple-choice questions found on such standardized tests. I also possess a number of professionally-developed practice SAT English and math tests that are extremely helpful in improving student performance on these tests.
I have enjoyed helping people learn ever since the days when I assisted my sister with her mathematics homework in high school. I vividly recall how angry and frustrated she would get when she couldn't grasp a certain concept, but I was always able to calm her down, help her understand whatever was puzzling her, and thereby restore her confidence in her ability to learn. In addition to knowing my subject matter and possessing the skill of being able to explain it clearly, I bring patience and kindness to the tutoring task. I find it tremendously rewarding to help people conquer their fears about learning and thereby allow their own abilities to flourish. The mixture of knowledge and compassion that I can provide can pave the road to success.
I was employed for many years by the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University where I taught courses, tutored students, and served as the primary computer support specialist for the faculty and staff. My computer support duties included the following:
(1) Managed acquisition/replacement/deployment of personal computers, printers and scanners.
(2) Installed/configured computers/networked printers/networked scanners.
(3) Installed/configured/provided troubleshooting and general assistance with:
Windows 7, Vista, XP, 98, 95, 3.1; DOS
Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access)
SPSS Statistical Package
Eudora E-mail Client
(4) Diagnosed and fixed hardware problems/installed new hardware components:
Memory chips, hard disks, CD/DVD drives, etc.
My courses used the SPSS statistical package and the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program. My classroom teaching was normally done in a computer lab in which each student had his/her own computer. With the use of a computer-screen projector, I would explain and demonstrate how to work through an assignment and the students would duplicate what I was doing on their own computers. I would provide individual assistance to any students having difficulties. Also, small groups and individual students often came to see me during my tutoring hours for assistance with their group projects, theses, dissertations and sometimes simply their homework assignments.
I recently retired from my job with the Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University. I was primarily a computer-support specialist, but my duties also included classroom teaching, small-group instruction and one-on-one tutoring, all of which I performed for more than 25 years. Most of this work was related to the use of statistical and spreadsheet software for social science research and financial problem-solving.

With the use of a computer-screen projector, I would explain and demonstrate how to work through an assignment and the students would duplicate what I was doing on their own computers. Throughout the years, family members, friends and neighbors, both young and old, have all come to me for assistance with their schoolwork, their preparation for standardized tests, and their computer troubles. In addition to helping these people with their assignments in their mathematics and computer courses, I have often served as a proofreader/editor/thought-organizer/grammar-specialist for those doing written assignments.
Wonderful tutor, very professional, excellent follow-up — Robert is very smart, patient and very knowledge about all aspects of computer software. If we didn't knew how to do something, he knows so much about the principles of how the systems work, he easily found the answers and helped me write the steps down so I wouldn't forget them. I would highly recommend Robert and I will be meeting with him again in the near future. He is a lovely, friendly, and ...
