I am a certified (NJ) teacher of English Language Arts for grades K - 8. I currently teach in Newark at a charter school which ranks in the top 10% of schools in the state. I hold a degree in Theatre Studies from Yale University and have over 25 years of experience in teaching young people to read, write and think critically.

I can help your child meet and exceed their potential with one-on-one instruction, where we can evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and together draft a study plan which will ensure their improved performance, both in the classroom and on the state examinations. I am also available to consult with parents on how they can assist their child on a day-to-day basis with homework, supplemental study plans and learning tools.

The new national Common Core Standards for English Language Arts, which have recently been implemented, may seem intimidating to digest at first glance, but rest assured, these new standards will help your child become a better reader, writer and thinker. As your student and you gain a better understanding of what the expectations are for them with these new standards at each grade level, your child will be on their way to becoming a better student in all subjects, as well as a more attractive, competitive high school and college applicant.

I am willing to tutor students from grades 3 through 12. My scheduling for tutoring is flexible, especially for summer, with both day and evening times available. There is a 24-hour cancellation policy.

I look forward to discussing how I can work with you, to help your child find their comfort level with Language Arts and find the joy and power that comes with the mastery of the English language.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently hold a standard certification in K - 5 education from the State of New Jersey. For the past 3 years, I have been teaching Reading, Writing, Grammar and Social Studies to 4th, 5th and 6th graders at a charter school in Newark, NJ, which ranks in the top 10% of schools in New Jersey within its demographic scope. I work with students in large classes, as well as in small group and one-on-one settings. I have been engaged to work at the same school for the upcoming (2014) school year. I am currently a tutor in English for several of my students.

Public Speaking

I received my undergraduate degree in Theatre Studies from Yale University. In my professional life as an executive assistant, I have worked with some of New York City’s most influential CEO’s and executives on their speech writing and practice with their speaking performances. In this capacity, several of my employers were represented by professional speakers’ bureaus. My theatrical and speech training gives me great perspective on how speakers can achieve effective content and connection with an audience. I have trained young actors for the professional stage for the last 30 years, including positions as Assistant Director of the Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City and Director of the Theatre program at the Chautauqua Institution in Western New York.

Social Studies

I currently hold a standard certification in K - 5 education and Middle School English from the State of New Jersey. For the past 3 years, I have been teaching Reading, Writing, Grammar and Social Studies to 4th - 8th graders at a charter school in Newark, NJ, which ranks in the top 10% of schools in New Jersey within its demographic scope. I work with students in large classes, as well as in small group and one-on-one settings. I have been engaged to work at the same school for the upcoming (2014-2015) school year. In my former careers at a national news magazine and a public radio station, I have gained excellent experience in researching, analyzing and reporting on current events, historical, governmental and political subjects - experience which I have brought to my classroom work, with much success.

Theatre

I received my undergraduate degree in Theatre Studies from Yale University. I have trained young actors for the professional stage and screen for the last 30 years, including positions as Assistant Director of the Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City and Director of the Theatre program at the Chautauqua Institution in Western New York. Besides performing and directing in numerous regional theatres around the nation over the course of my career, I am about to receive my official theatre certification from the New Jersey Department of Education, to teach theater in New Jersey public schools.

Writing

As a writing instructor, I have guided my students to acceptance into such programs as New Jersey Seeds, The Wight Foundation, Prep for Prep and The Johns Hopkins CTY Scholars Program.

Besides being certified to teach English Language Arts, in my previous career, I was a writer for Ms. magazine, one of the most established names in American Journalism.

I can most certainly help you to write effective, elegantly-written papers.
