Lesley College Grad School (Master's)
I am Carina and hold a Master's in Education from Lesley College, MA. I was born in Argentina. I have been studying English since I was 4. I used to teach English there until I moved to the US in 1996. Since then I have been teaching Spanish both in language institutes in New York city and close to my current home in Newburgh, NY. I love languages, teaching and people. I am fully bilingual and I live a bilingual life raising my daughter who is ten and my son who is 3 years old as I expose them to both Spanish and American languages and cultures daily.
I believe everybody regardless of age and experience can learn if I respect the student's needs, pace and learning style , and if I tap into his or her interests, likes and strengths. Covering a comprehensive approach that includes speaking, reading, writing and listening is necessary since these four areas of knowledge feed off each other. Knowledge, fun, flexibility, resourcefulness, creativity together with the specific teaching strategies and attitudes will guarantee an effective pleasant experience for the student.
I encourage, I model, I give feedback, I challenge, I praise, I reward as needed. I welcome mistakes since I see them as opportunities to learn. I take advantage of as many chances as possible to provide cultural information to give a context and to enrich the learning as well. I give homework because I know practice produces learning and learning reinforces motivation.
I can't wait to meet you, my new student!

I had the pleasure to take Spanish classes with Carina for a few months. The classes were well prepared and focused on the objectives to achieve. Carina is a very dedicated tutor who I would really recommend to anyone looking to improve their Spanish.
I have been studying Spanish with Carina for several months now. She is very professional, patient and engaging as a teacher. We often do a mix of speaking and writing exercises. I have my own workbook that I work from, but our sessions are geared towards what I want to focus on mostly. When I have no clue what to do, she always has suggestions. She stays on top of me about grammar, pronunciation and using new vocabulary which is important for speaking a new language. I feel that I am becoming more confident in my knowledge and ability to speak without too much hesitation. Additionally, her rates are reasonable. She even offers Skype as an option which provides flexibility when in a time crunch. I tried another tutor in the area before finding her, and knew from the first session that it was a great fit for me. I highly recommend Carina!
I've had a few Skype language tutors but Carina's one of my favorites. She's very accommodating and flexible with schedules and has a knack for teaching. She uses a marker board which helps with illustrating concepts. Her explanations are easy to understand, she knows all the idiomatic phrases and nuances in the language, and breaks down difficult grammar structures well. I'd definitely recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I can teach speaking, writing, reading and listening skills. To this end I cover vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, fluency, intonation, rules and exceptions, idiomatic expressions, and cultural information.
I took the TOEFL test when I wanted to apply for a Masters program. I also prepared some students both in Argentina and in the US. Everybody did very well.
I can help you learn writing skills including mechanics and conventions, writing content, writing preparation, and writing production and revision.
