I was a tutor and teaching assistant in college for statistics. I also teach high school kids math and English in Jersey City. My teaching methods are pretty simple. Mostly I use examples of what the student is interested in. Something that will stick to their minds because they already like the topic. I also use jokes and terms to help them remember things.
An example that comes to mind is my name. My name is Saeed, people have difficulty pronouncing and remembering it. So I just tell them it's like how rappers Westside...WestSAIIIIDE....Ignore the "west" part and you have my name. You'll be surprised how many people pronounce my name perfectly using that technique. I make my students do a lot of examples, and I make sure they show every single step the make to get the final answer. If a step is skipped, then its wrong in my head. Until the students master that particular topic, they'll have to do every single step when solving. They hate it, but it works so I'm sticking with it.
I also passed my Praxis exam, so I am certified to teach high school math. I'm also in the process of getting my Cisco certification for IT essentials.
