I have been tutoring since High School (more years ago than I care to admit!). For the past 10 years I've been tutoring many different subjects including math, history, English (writing, grammar, vocabulary, etc.) and Judaic studies. For better or worse, my students have a tendency to do so well that they don't need me anymore. That's good for the students.

I look forward to tutoring your children and teens. I have experience with children as young as 2nd grade and as old as teens (some of the teens I tutored were my own classmates and schoolmates in High School). I also have experience working with adults.

If you'd like to know more about me, check out my blog on WyzAnt.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

I have been a graphic artist for over 20 years. I started doing graphics on computers in the early 80s, then moved on to the Macintosh in the 90s. I got my own Mac in the mid-90s and never looked back. I have worked with many photo software programs before I ever was introduced to Photoshop. I initially worked on an old version of Photoshop, but since last December (2010), I've been working on Photoshop from CS5 on a PC system.

Algebra 1

I began tutoring Algebra when I was a sophomore in High School. In my senior year, I was working with many of the freshman girls (I went to an all-girl school) on their algebra.

While in college, I worked tutoring math (including algebra) for a program called "Upward Bound". My students were college bound students who earned high grades, but struggled a bit in math.

Since those years, I have been tutoring privately. I have a student (who I've been working with since he was in 2nd grade -- he's in High School now) who has told me on more than one occasion that I teach him in an hour or two what his teacher didn't teach him in a month.

I enjoy tutoring all forms of math. I look forward to working with your child.

Algebra 2

I began tutoring Algebra when I was a sophomore in High School. In my senior year, I was working with many of the freshman girls (I went to an all-girl school) on their algebra.

While in college, I worked tutoring math (including algebra) for a program called "Upward Bound". My students were college bound students who earned high grades, but struggled a bit in math.

I enjoy tutoring all forms of math. I look forward to working with your child.

American History

I have always been a big fan of history. When I was younger, my brother and I used to read biographies and read about Kings and Queens of England, play with Presidents' statues and fill Presidents' coloring books.

Since I began tutoring, I've worked with students on American history, readying them for tests and helping them organize information to write papers for history classes. I also helped them to mentally organize facts and figure by using mnemonic devises.

Because I enjoy analyzing the information, I begin to open students up to interesting aspects of history and the people involved in it.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience tutoring Elementary Subjects. I have tutored students as young as 2nd grade in subject like math, language arts, history, other social studies, science and many other subjects. I have worked with younger students on improving their reading and writing.

Because of my experiences with younger children, I am certain that I could help your child improve in school as I have with previous students.

Elementary Math

I've been tutoring math since I was in high school. During that time, while most of my students have been in high school, I have also worked with elementary school students. I worked with three students, beginning when they were in 2nd grade, 4th grade and 6th grade. I still work with one of them (he's now in 10th grade) and I worked with the older two through elementary school (the oldest of the three is currently in college and I worked with her until the end of High School).

I enjoy tutoring math. I hope to work with your child.

Geometry

I began tutoring Geometry when I was a junior in high school. That year, I had a student who asked me to help her at the very end of the semester, after she had an average of about 40 in her tests. I helped her to the point that she was eventually able to get a B in the class.

While in college, I worked tutoring math (including geometry) for a program called "Upward Bound".

When I was in 10th grade, I created my own version of the NY regents exam (I went to high school in NY) and my classmates and friends who looked at it said they were glad I didn't create the test they were going to be taking. I have always told my students, though, that if they can do the problems I create for them they'll have no trouble doing the problems on the test they're taking. After their tests, they tell me I was right in this regard.

I enjoy tutoring all forms of math, though Geometry IS my favorite. I look forward to working with your child.

Hebrew

I have experience tutoring Hebrew language and Judaic studies. I myself learned Hebrew language and Religious studies in Yeshiva (religious school) which I attended through High School. I have also been to Israel many times (the first time on a program for the better part of a year; I currently have family there and visit, on average, every year and a half). In addition to my earlier education, I have been studying Halakha (Jewish law -- including Talmud) for the past 2 years. I have experience with Humash (Tora) and Rashi, Navi (Prophets) and Hebrew Language.

Prealgebra

I began tutoring Algebra when I was a sophomore in high school. In my senior year, I was working with many of the freshman girls (I went to an all-girl school) on their algebra.

While in college, I worked tutoring math (including algebra) for a program called "Upward Bound". My students were college bound students who earned high grades, but struggled a bit in math.

In the past 8 years, I have been working with pre-high school students. I have helped math students in all math disciplines.

During those years, I have been tutoring privately. I have a student (who I've been working with since he was in 2nd grade -- he's in high school now) who has told me on more than one occasion that I teach him in an hour or two what his teacher didn't teach him in a month.

I enjoy tutoring all forms of math. I look forward to working with your child.

Regents

I went to HS in New York and, while in high school, I took several Regents exams, which included 3 math regents (algebra, geometry and algebra II/trigonometry) and 3 science regents (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), 2 Language (Hebrew and French), English and History. Because of this, I know how the regents exams are set up and, even though I would only consider myself a tutor in Math, History and Hebrew on the regents level, I believe that the quantity of regents exams I have taken and passed helps me to be a better math, history (I have tutored world and American history, as well as Jewish history) and Hebrew language (I have experience with Hebrew language tutoring and speak fluent Hebrew, both Modern Hebrew and Biblical Hebrew) tutor.

As a tutor, I have tutored students in Math for the regents -- mostly algebra I and geometry (I did this while still in high school and recently for the Math I and Math II regents). (While in high school, I even created my own Geometry Regents which my friends all thought was harder than the state's exam.)

I enjoy the challenge of the regents questions. I am confident that I can help your high schooler excel in the Regents exam.

Religion

I have experience tutoring Hebrew language and Judaic studies. I myself learned Hebrew language and Religious studies in Yeshiva (religious school) which I attended through High School. I have also been to Israel many times (the first time on a program for the better part of a year; I currently have family there and visit, on average, every year and a half). In addition to my earlier education, I have been studying Halakha (Jewish law -- including Talmud) for the past 2 years. I have experience with Humash (Tora) and Rashi, Navi (Prophets) and Hebrew Language.

Because of my experiences with tutoring Judaism and Judaic studies to children and teens, I am certain that I could help your child improve in school as I have with previous students.

In general, I have no regrets. Regrets don't help unless you do something about them. But I do have some advice I'd give my younger self if I could. When I was in my 20s, I went back to (and, eventually graduated with a BA in TV/Radio from another college) college, taking classes at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in NY. I was working full time in Brooklyn and and living in Lower Manhattan... read more

WyzAnt has been having an essay contest for students. The prize is money toward college. And I started reading the essays. Now, I know math is my best subject, but I do have an eye (and ear) for grammar, and I have also edited writing. But I digress.... The essays had me thinking of who were my teaching inspirations.
