I am a dedicated and experienced English and ESL tutor. I am an American who has lived overseas for the last 20 years. I started tutoring English while living in Asia and Europe. I loved it and found I got a lot of satisfaction in helping people improve their English. When I moved back to the US, I returned to the University of Pennsylvania to become formally certified to teach English as a Second Language.

I have lived in six countries on four continents, and had extended stays in a dozen more. I know what it feels like to adapt to a new culture and try to learn a new language as quickly as possible. It is not easy, but the rewards are great when you succeed. I can help you.

My lessons usually focus on communication skills, with an emphasis on grammar. I concentrate on speaking, listening and reading in class and writing skills for homework. I am flexible and adaptable and will try many different exercises in order for you to achieve your goals.

Grammar

You can learn grammar without being bored! I teach grammar in context, from a reading assignment or article. From the reading, we pick out a particular grammar point to learn. The student learns not only the rule, but how it is applied and how the meaning of the sentence might change if the rule is not followed. We practice how the structure is used in everyday conversations as well as in writing. I find that grammar is better understood when it is presented in context.

Writing

I teach an advanced grammar course and essay writing in preparation for exams. I tutor students on the process of writing an essay, from subject selection and essay structure through the grammar, sentence structure and paragraph formation necessary for writing a good essay. English

I usually begin a lesson with a reading assignment. From the reading, we review vocabulary, idioms, grammar points and comprehension. For pronunciation practice, I have the student read out loud. The student is encouraged to discuss the story, offer opinions, and support their ideas through examples. From one reading assignment, the student improves in many different areas of English.

TOEFL

I have just returned to the US after living in Asia and Europe for the last 20 years. I am familiar with the school systems in the U.S., Europe and Asia, and how they differ in preparing students. For TOEFL students, I tailor lessons to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, but also focus on test taking skills. Each area of the TOEFL exam is covered, with particular attention being paid to the student's needs.

ESL/ESOL

I have lived overseas for the last 20 years, in nine countries on four continents. I have experienced culture shock, and the necessity of learning another language as quickly as possible. My lessons are tailored to the student's needs and adjusted to improve fluency at a pace set by the student. I tutor absolute beginners through to university students preparing for graduate school exams. I can help you improve your ability to communicate, express yourself, and understand others.
