I am an experienced, certified professional teacher available for a wide variety of tutoring needs from elementary through post-secondary levels depending on the client's individual needs. My areas of expertise include college application essay writing, test prep, ESL, Spanish, French, Math through Algebra, Reading Strategies, Social Studies, English grammar, editing, proofreading, life coaching, and public relations. I have worked for years as a public school teacher, and my tutoring and editorial experience is extensive. I work well one on one; I possess great patience and the ability to explain concepts and facts clearly.
I find the best route to success for my clients is to engage them in high-interest, context-based materials. I believe that instilling self-confidence in clients is one of the most important factors in helping them achieve their goals. My pedagogical methods are based on a holistic approach to teaching and coaching, in which I integrate many strategies to meet my clients' needs and incorporate techniques that take into account the multiple skills and prior knowledge they already possess. My success rate with clients is quite high as I truly care about each and every one of them and employ all that I've learned over the years to help them experience success and a sense of real accomplishment.
I am a certified professional teacher who has experience teaching and tutoring many subjects, including college essay writing. My certifications are in ESL, French, and Spanish. I also have an extensive professional background in writing and editing, and I am a certified life coach -- which helps in my work with young people.
I have NYS certification in teaching ESL grades K-12th, which includes academic content area as well as instruction in English. Therefore, I have experience teaching content area (math, science, social studies, and English) acquired the time that I spent teaching ESL students in grades K-6th. I have also, separately, privately tutored elementary-aged students in math.
I have a 2003 Master's of Professional Studies degree and NYS permanent certification to teach ESL/ESOL in grades K-12th. NYS certification is reciprocal in NJ, which is where I am now residing. I have experience teaching ESL in a public school setting since earning my certification. I have also participated in tutoring ESL through private organizations and have had private ESL students in my own tutoring business in the past.
As part of my job teaching ESL in the public school system, I have been required to prepare high school students to take Regents examinations in the following subject areas: English, U.S. History, Global History, Algebra, Biology, and Earth Science. I have been successful in assisting students, even those whose native language is not English, in passing those exams.
As a 10+ years ESL teacher, I am quite experienced in working one-on-one with students whose special needs INCLUDE learning English, but very often also include overcoming learning and/or emotional disabilities that are making it harder for them to overcome the challenge of learning a new language. In addition, I have experience tutoring in the area of SPED(for an agency), and I have taught modified foreign language classes that were specifically comprised of special needs students in a public middle school.
My experience in teaching study skills includes teaching students how to budget their time most effectively, how to organize their notebooks, folders, subject notes, and homework assignments, how to prioritize their work, test taking stragies, reading comprehension skills (gleaning main ideas, facts vs. opinions, sub-topics, etc.), how to look for contextual clues, note-taking skills, adapting to their own unique learning styles (through metacognitive awareness), writing from brainstorming all the way through outlining, drafting, revising, proofreading, and final "publishing," stress reduction techniques to optimize learning as well as test results, how and when to use different resources on the Internet as well as the "old-fashioned" ways (dictionaries, finding books in the library, etc.), and more.
