I have been tutoring adults and children in English as a Second Language, both here and abroad, since 1998.
My degree in in Adult Education, which included things like developing trainings, workshops and classes for the adult learner, teaching methodology, curriculum planning, communication, psychology of learning, and the best strategies for teaching the adult learner.
I lived in Germany for 10 Years, where I used this knowledge, as well as a strong background in American English, to tutor both individuals and small groups in ESL at the University.
I have also worked as an English Language Trainer for companies such as Cartus International and Global Arena tutoring business professionals and their family members in English as a Second Language. I develop an individual training program for each student based on their interests, abilities, learning styles, and needs. I have tutored children new to English from age 5 all the way to high school level, and I adjust my English lessons based on their school needs, their age and their ability. I have taught also taught adult learners, from complete beginners all the way to business professionals wishing to brush up on Business English skills, such as presentations, meetings, negotiations, etc.
I choose materials carefully, using standard ESL materials available, and also help students track their progress with tools such as quizzes, conversation practice, writing exercises, etc. I encourage students to work with material they will encounter in real life- for example, yesterday I worked with a beginning student in the steps she needed to contact the local YMCA and inquire about their programs and membership. We practiced the phrases she would need, vocabulary she would likely encounter, and we role played "calling the YMCA" and asking for information.
