Let's work together! Addressing your needs is most important.

We can work together to accomplish your goals. Your success is my inspiration.

Making a difference is what I am all about. I am dedicated to you, or your child, achieving a new level of learning and have tutored all ages from elementary through adult. Each has its unique style and I am in tune with speaking appropriately With you; not at you.

My style is to build on your strengths while reinforcing progress. That forms a solid foundation which comfortably brings you and the subject matter closer together. Utilizing methods of guided self-discovery gives you a path of learning that works with your lifestyle. We will use Visual, Audio, and Hands-on techniques to reinforce successful learning.

My experience in tutoring goes back to my college days... the late 1970's; where I tutored Computers, Economics and Statistics to college level students. Through the ensuing years, I've continued private tutoring in Math, Computers, Business Writing, Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint, and the other subjects listed in my profile. I used to build PC's for fun.

Tutoring children (K-8) was mostly in Math, Reading and Writing; as well as preparing 8th graders for High School.

Also, I taught formerly on a masters level at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. Individual tutoring in business writing was necessary for some of my masters level students. We made time and they did well. That course deliverable is an 85-110 pager paper. I've written corporate seminars and classes tutoring various computer systems to cross cultural English speaking audiences. I've taught internationally. The photo is of me with my Chinese students while I was teaching in Beijing, China; masters level course in advanced project management. However, it became apparent that English/MSWord/MSPowerPoint tutoring was necessary so as to complete the course materials on schedule. So, I created an on-site tutoring class and all went well.

I enjoy singing (opera, classical, church Choir), piano, sailing, cooking, all genres of music, and good conversation.

Thank you for considering my profile.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I'm self taught in several computer languages. I wrote both application and systems level programs.

I tutored programming for several years, college level, and wrote several adult how-to computer classes while at my former company.

The most important aspect of computer programming, in any computer language, is the approach and design of your logic. That is where all the mistakes are made.

I can help you design your program in an outline, flowchart or clearly defined design before you write any code.

After which, we can work together while writing your code.

Cooking

I was Head Chef a restaurant kitchen for several years while in college; similar to a Houlihan's.

Also, I grew up helping my mom preparing for the big holiday gatherings; we usually had about 20-40 people. I did that for about 25 years. We had to plan the dinners, get the supplies, and time the cooking.

I can tutor you for cooking at home and preparing family dinners.

DOS

I did DOS programming in the 1980's while at ADP processing in Roseland, NJ. Also, I am comfortable using DOS mode in windows.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've done private tutoring with children for the past 20 years in Math, Reading, Writing and Science. Parents would ask me to work with their children.

Age groups range from K-6th, with most students being in the K-4 range.

My methods work across all subjects and student difficulties. My approach is to gently work with the student to identify how we can comfortably get past their roadblock.

Specific methods I use are to gently work with the student in how they are most open to learning: Visual, Audio or Tactile. Once we establish the most comfortable method (usually within ten to fifteen minutes), we can then move forward with the teaching using the best method.

Visual: "I see what you are saying."
Audio: "I heard that."
Tactile: "I remember it better when I do it."

Another method is to allow the student to reiterate their success there by reinforcing the learning technique. "You did great!" "Great job!"

We can then use the textbooks from the school to work on specific assignments and subjects.

Elementary Math

I've tutored children (K-6) for years in Math, Reading, Writing and Science.

I like to relate Math with the real world. Math is all around us in the everyday world. Such as "half" is the same as "1/2", "that is twice as much" = "2x", and so on.

I respect all children as "young adults with something to contribute." They are the future.
As such, they are empowered to do their best.

Children have an awesome willingness to learn. I believe that all children are good people.

Many times, I learn a little something from them!

General Computer

Having worked with pretty much all types of computers for the past 30 years gives me a well rounded qualification to talk about Computers.

No matter what it is you would like to learn about computers, I can help you. I have taught people, just like you!, how to simply turn on the machine for home use to creating a Networked office of multiple machines running a business.
And, we can make it fun too!

I would be happy to show you the differences between Hardware, Software, Systems, Applications, Storage Devices, Networking, and the Internet.

I can show you how to build a PC from scratch, load the operating system (what is that?!), configure (again, a computer term), and make the best use of your computer investment.

The most important thing when working with computers is to how you would intend to use the computer. Computers used to process business needs (documents, spreadsheets, etc.) are different than computers used for graphics and media.

So, I would be glad to help you with a single computer for personal use or we can connect up an office with multiple networked computers.

Best Regards,
Vincent

Golf

I've been playing golf since I was 12 years old. I took lessons from a pro as well as my father and brother giving me constant reinforcement.

Swing and Stance are only part of the golf game; course strategy is another aspect. Sometimes you are better to use an 8iron pitch into the green than a full wedge. Also, where to place your drive and general approach to the green are important.

I've taught swing and stance mechanics to mostly adults for about 10 years. The most chronic problems are moving your head during the swing (a.k.a. Staying with the Shot" and ball placement within your stance. Many other subtle mechanics fall into place after we master those basics.

Hook/Slice - no problem, we'll work on that too and get you on par!

Macintosh

I used to build PC's from scratch and install the operating systems for fun.

Now I use a Macbook Pro 17" and love the ease of navigation and the like. I would use this while teaching my classes.

The most impressive feature, in my humble opinion, is the ease in which the Mac connects to the networks.

Microsoft Excel

I've been using Excel since the early 1990's!

I'm proficient with both PC and Mac versions.

I can show you how to create reports that are simple and basic, professional, up to the Executive level.

Proficient in excel standard functions (fonts, basic formulas, etc.) such as:

- Pivot Table Reports,
- Print Layouts,
- complicated Formulas,
- Charts and Graphs,
- Mail Merge (to create printed mailing lists),
- using formulas to parse data,
- Array Formulas (powerful tool to process large numbers of Rows and Columns in one formula),
- Embedding into MSWord (use a single Excel across multiple MSWord docs. You can update the XLSX in Excel (single point of reference) which will then simultaneously propagate to the multiple MSWord docs).
- Cross Reference Data lookup (VLOOKUP functions): Sample formula that finds a "needle in a haystack": =IF(ISERROR(VLOOKUP($A4,'raw data fortune'!$A$4:$H$511,7,FALSE))=TRUE,"-",IF(VLOOKUP($A4,'raw data fortune'!$A$4:$H$511,7,FALSE)>0,VLOOKUP($A4,'raw data fortune'!$A$4:$H$511,7,FALSE),"-"))

Microsoft Outlook

I've used Outlook since it first came out in 1997.

I can setup multiple accounts, inbox(es), rules, folders, viewing options, fonts, and have used most all the preferences and settings.

I'm proficient in Outlook for both PC and Mac.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I've been using Microsoft PowerPoint since 1993.

I'm proficient with both PC and Mac versions.

Proficient in all the standard features such as Animations, Embedding into MSWord, Images, Sound files, Internet links, Master Templates, Setting up Toolbars, Preferences, etc.

Microsoft Word

I've been using MSWord since the early 1990's.

I'm proficient with both PC and Mac versions.

I show you how to create looking reports from the simple and basic, professional, to executive level.

Proficient with the standard features as well as:
Setting up your Toolbars,
Mail Merge,
Tables,
Tracking Changes,
Bookmarking,
Table of Contents,
Chapters,
Headings,
Footnotes,
Appendixes,
Cross-References,
Printing Options,
Embedded Spreadsheets and/or Presentations,
Microsoft Word user Preferences

Public Speaking

Here is the opportunity to bring your confidence in public speaking to a level once thought impossible.

- I've performed concerts on stages around the world.

- I've prepared and delivered numerous technical and marketing presentations.

- I've taught masters level courses in the USA and China.

They all share the common theme of Public Speaking.
They also have a common experience in my tutoring people within each discipline.

I can show you how to pace your speech, walk with confidence, talk effectively, engage your audience, listen and adjust, dress accordingly, critical timing, effective body animation, vocal dynamics, and yes, even breath control.

Reading

I've taught several years on a master's level where each student's final paper had a mandatory 18 chapters and would range from 85-110 pages.

Yes, that is a decent amount of reading, editing and grading!

I taught beginner-English Chinese students in Beijing, China how to read the materials for the class.

I welcome the opportunity to work with you.

Best Regards,
Vincent

Spelling

Here are some of the helpful Tips and Tricks we can learn towards successful Spelling:
1. This may be the best-known spelling rule:
i before e, except after c, or when sounded like "ay"
as in neighbor and weigh.

2. "Silent e helps a vowel say its name."

3. "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking?"

4. Learn the basic rules for spelling with plural nouns so that you know whether to use s or es and how to make plurals of nouns that end in y or f.

5. A good way to understand a word is to break it into syllables.

6. Make up funny memory aids.

7. Make up a sentence in which the first letter of each word can be used to make the spelling word.

8. Make sure that you are pronouncing words correctly.

9. Try these tips to words you find difficult to spell.

10. And lastly: Don't rely on electronic spellcheckers!

Study Skills

I taught 3 years at Stevens Institute of Technology in Advanced Project Management. Topics covered were Organizational Skills, General Subject Matter Preparation, How to Take Notes during lecture, Outline your subject matter BEFORE class time, and more!

Study Skills are unique for each student. We will explore what works best for you and then develop techniques to reinforce success. Such as making use of Visual, Audio, or Hands-on aids.

Voice (Music)

I've been singing since 1999. I staged performances of La'Traviata and performed in Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center, NYC for 6 years.

I also performed in Beijing and Shanghai, China. I'm currently singing professionally and have been tutoring voice lessons for about 10 years.

I am currently a professional singer.
My past performances are, in various capacities, on stage in Carnegie Hall, Metropolitan Opera House, Lincoln Center in NYC; Beijing Concert Hall, Beijing, China; Shanghai Grand Palace Theater, Shanghai, China; Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Newark, NJ, USA; all with years of professional vocal training.

My voice experiences in teaching/coaching has ranged from Teaching a shy teenage Korean male to Coaching a 20's something Down Syndrome male to very successfully perform at his brother's wedding.

Voice Teaching is different than Coaching. Teaching focuses on the technical aspects of the larynx and diaphragm using a variety of vocal exercises and facial muscles techniques. Yes, a smile, raised eyebrows or tongue position will change your voice! There is a reason why Pavarotti smiles he way he did during performances... he was controlling his voice!

Voice Coaching concentrates on preparation for a performance. Here, we focus on maximizing delivery of the music piece: identify voice to Match performance (i.e. Opera, Jazz, Rock, Ballad, etc.), Breath Control, Vocal Dynamics (e.g. Sotto Vocce, Espressivo, etc.), Vocal Resonance, Composer intent, etc. I've worked with various levels of performers; however, as mentioned above, my greatest achievement thus far was with Mr. R. (Down syndrome) in both Teaching and especially Coaching for his performance. He also learned how to read what he sang through my vocal training and pattern matching.

Bel Canto.

Writing

I've taught several years on a master's level where each student's final paper had a mandatory 18 chapters and would range from 85-110 pages.

Yes, that is a decent amount of writing!

Each paper made use of a variety of themes (i.e. Business, Opinion, Technical) in accordance with the chapter topic being presented.

Don't know what "i.e." means? No worries. I can teach you that and much more.

I taught all the above in the USA and to beginner level English speaking students in Beijing, China.

I welcome the opportunity to work with you.

Best Regards,
Vincent
