I hold a PhD in education and a Master in curriculum and instructional sciences. For the past 20 years, I have been teaching in public and private schools as well as holding one-on-one teaching/tutoring classes in math and test preparatory standardized exams.
My personal philosophy of education lies within a constructivist and transformational model of education where the role of the teacher is not to teach the “what” but the “how.” Rather than viewing education as a medium for transmitting knowledge from educators to students, I believe that the role of education is to create conditions and opportunities where it makes possible for learning to become a process of discovery and allows students to construct their own skills, knowledge, and understanding. From this perspective, the educator must put the learner at the center while developing the curriculum, by focusing on independent learning, task based learning, and meaningful learning. The role of the teacher thus becomes that of a guide providing access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information. Looking at education through this lens, learning becomes a process of comparing new knowledge and experiences to the previous ones, thence, leading to reinforcement and/or adaptation of that knowledge.
For many students, these goals can be achieved faster through a process of one on one tutoring where they can get individualized instruction tailored to their own needs and can have personal attention to move at their own pace. To ensure these goals are achieved, I provide my students challenging homework, regular assessment, personalized feedback, and progress report. Through this process, I keep my students challenged yet not overwhelmed. I teach private and group lessons and I have helped many students to develop their potentials and build their skills and improve their grades and, as a result, reach higher levels of achievements.
