I have fifteen years of experience in teaching English as a Second Language and preparing students to pass their United States Citizenship Interview. My career in Adult Education included helping students with basic skills (reading, writing, math, grammar) and test-taking skills necessary for passing the GED test. I also taught office and computer skills.

Although I myself have had high academic achievement and a master's degree from Columbia University, I pride myself on not being pedantic. I meet my students' needs with patience and kindness, building their confidence and facilitating their progress. My methods help individuals achieve their goals.

I am available during the day but would prefer not to teach in the evenings.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ASVAB

My specialty for many years has been helping students to prepare for and pass tests that help them reach their goals. I have assisted students in passing the GED and Citizenship tests. I have also worked for New Jersey Bell (now Verizon) to help their employees pass company tests for promotion. My strong points are assessing a student's strengths and weaknesses, building their confidence as they improve their skills.

Biology

I graduated from Brooklyn College with honors in biology and earned a master's degree in zoology from Columbia University. I taught high school biology and general science before switching to the field of adult education.

I believe my adult ed experience gives me the ability to assess a student's skills and problem areas. I can then provide the support needed to help him/her achieve success in any subject area. However, biology is the particular discipline in which I have a very strong academic background myself.

English

I have been teaching English as a Second Language for fifteen years. In addition, I have had a career in Adult Education, helping students pass the English portion of the GED. I have been a writer and editor of school and organization newspapers. My expertise in business writing and editing has been acknowledged.

ESL/ESOL

I spent most of my career in Adult Education, preparing students for the GED test, including the English portion. I have completed literacy volunteer training. For the last fifteen years I have taught ESL.

GED

I spent most of my career in Adult Education, preparing students for the GED test. I worked at two full-time Adult Learning Centers as instructor and then Master Teacher. I attended and presented workshops on techniques for instructing the adult learner.

Grammar

I have had writing and editorial experience on high school, college, and other newspapers. As a GED instructor, I refreshed my grammar skills and taught students to pass the grammar and writing parts of the GED test. Currently, I'm teaching ESL students at various levels.

Proofreading

I'm a careful proofreader and editor. I've honed my skills from an early age, on my high school, college, and organization newspapers. More recently, I've done business writing and editing.

Reading

I am an avid reader with a joy of reading that started when I was a little girl. Therefore, I have enthusiasm and skills to share with my students. I have successfully prepared them for the reading portions of the GED. I also have helped students pass the U.S. Citizenship Interview by improving their pronunciation, vocabulary, and understanding of what they read.

TOEFL

My excellent grammar and vocabulary skills qualify me to teach English to the foreign born. I also have training and experience teaching English and test-taking skills. My maturity and kindness towards students facilitates their learning and builds confidence.

Vocabulary

As an avid reader, I've developed an extensive vocabulary. I pride myself on being able to help my ESL students build a broader English vocabulary. This enables them to better understand and communicate.

Writing

I have been an avid reader and writer since I was a young student. I was a writer and editor on my high school and college newspapers. I have continued to build my writing skills through my career in Adult Education. I've also developed business writing and editing skills as Administrative Assistant and Office Manager in banking and a small business.
