After 20 years of successful teaching experience with adults and children, I've learned how to communicate concepts and skills across in a supportive, stress-free atmosphere. Both music and mathematics are subjects to love, and learning should be a joy.

Music,, whether popular or classical, can be shared with others and the student can enjoy increasing achievement in technique and understanding of musical concepts. Keyboard facility opens the door to participation in bands and/or chamber groups, amateur or professional, as well as employment in theater, choral, or church accompaniment or entertaining as a solo artist. I have had professional experience in most of these areas, and can guide students who aspire to involvement in them.

Music may be a requirement for certain elementary teaching positions; mathematics is certainly a requirement for the ACT, SAT and even high school graduation. However, mathematics can be enjoyed for its own sake, and through math training, students can learn to think in new and effective ways about the world around them.

I especially enjoy tutoring seniors, as I have seen the progress my adult students have made. Both music and math are wonderful exercises for the mind.

I have a BA in math from New York University which helped me to reach a 700+ score on the GRE test. Piano

In teaching piano, I bring the following educational and professional experience to the table: I have a master's degree in music from Columbia University's Teachers' College, supplemented with courses in theory, ear training, and applied piano in college and extension divisions at Juilliard, Mannes College of Music and Manhattan School of Music. I've worked as a pit musician during the national tour of "Halfway There" and at the Allenberry Dinner Theatre; as choral accompanist and church musician at many sites in Bergen County, New Jersey.

My experience in teaching piano includes maintaining my own private studio with yearly recitals, as well as teaching at Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ., Woodside Music Studios and both Tenafly and Ramsey Adult Schools. I have had students from age 5 to 70 and find that adults learn at least as fast as children if they are consistent with lessons and practicing.

Learning "piano" (or electronic keyboard) really means learning to elicit music, whether classical or popular, from the instrument. In order to do this, the pianist has to know the music he or she is trying to reproduce. The most convenient way of doing this is to read music - but that isn't required; plenty of individuals who are not sighted learn to play by ear. Reading (or reproducing by ear) is made easy by recognition of the rhythmic and harmonic patterns of music.

In addition, there are technical considerations. How does one strike a note to produce a pleasing sound? How can one travel rapidly around the keyboard? One might mention considerations of style. The music of Chopin doesn't sound like that of Bach or Duke Ellington, and isn't played in the same way.

This might sound daunting, but in the end, few of us are required to learn to play the piano and we do it because of our enjoyment of music. Lessons as well should be stress-free and pleasant, because that is the best environment for learning.
