I am an Ivy League graduate with a M.S. Degree in Education and 30 years of experience teaching math and reading to children and young adults. I provide differentiated instruction and use student strengths to support areas that prove more difficult for them. I teach children to read using the Orton-Gillingham Multi-Sensory Approach. I enjoy helping older students with research papers. People achieve more when they get immediate, positive, constructive feedback during lessons that are active and enjoyable. I can work at your home, in my office, via Skype, at the library or on-line. My fees are flexible and may depend on individual circumstances. Talk to me about what you need!

College Counseling

I am a very good academic writer and an even better editor. I help students focus and unify their ideas. I help them understand and clarify the message that they want to present to the college of their choice. I enjoy meeting kids and working with them to present their "best face forward." I've worked with over a dozen college-bound students who were relieved and happy with the input I offered as they constructed their essay. I am a certified teacher with an advanced certificate to teach writing.

Dyslexia

As an elementary school teacher I have encountered many students with dyslexia and other assorted neurological difficulties. I have always been able to help my students and I gain immense satisfaction from their successes. I am a certified teacher. I am certified to teach reading and writing using the Orton-Gillingham Multi-Sensory approach, and I have an additional post Master's certificate to teach writing. I also have specialized training to teach math to children who need more hands-on instruction. More importantly, I understand children who struggle with the traditional approaches often used by schools and teachers. When I work with these children, I make sure that they are fully engaged, that they are active physically and mentally, and that they enjoy working working with me. It takes a little time to find what works well for each individual child, but it is worth every moment.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified, experienced teacher with a Master’s Degree from The Hunter Graduate School of Education. In addition, I has pursued several post-masters specializations in order to provide differentiated instruction(1) in math(2), writing(3), and reading(4). I have taught children in pre-school through sixth grade and currently teach writing to middle school students at The Wilson School in New Jersey. My family and I live in Englewood, New Jersey, a twenty minute drive from Manhattan.

I provide concurrent organizational and time management skills with all subjects (K-6)and writing (K-12). Instruction may be a combination of modern and traditional methods. In addition, I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham Multi-Sensory approach to reading and writing. I have developed an elementary level reading comprehension program and prepared a lower school word study program complete with materials for my school. Furthermore, I am technologically adept, specifically with Apple products, which provide extremely helpful study applications.

Parent support is part of the tutoring session. I was born in Peru to European parents, and I came to the states when I was 7 years old. I still understand and speak Spanish fluently although I have been an American citizen for 46 years. Communication with your child's teacher is inclusive, as are all manipulative materials for use during our meetings.

Phonics

I am a certified, experienced teacher with a Master’s Degree from The Hunter Graduate School of Education. In addition, I have pursued several post-masters specializations in order to provide differentiated instruction(1), writing(2), and reading(3). I have taught children in pre-school through eighth grade and currently teach writing to middle school students at The Wilson School in Mountain Lakes, NJ. My family and I live in Englewood, NJ, a twenty minute drive from Manhattan.

I provide concurrent organizational and time management skills while tutoring in phonics (K-6). Student lessons may be a combination of modern and traditional methods. In addition, I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham Multi-Sensory approach to reading and writing. I have developed an elementary level reading comprehension program and prepared a lower school phonics/word-study program complete with materials for The Cathedral School, a private K-8 school in Manhattan. Furthermore, I am technologically adept, specifically with Apple products, many of whom are excellent study aids.

My family moved to the U.S. when I was seven, and I have been an American citizen for 46 years. Proofreading

What I do best and love to do most is help students to write research papers. Many students need organizational and editing support once they begin to write an essay or a paper. They have ideas but need help laying out the structure, or they have disparate points to make but need an overall clarifying "umbrella" to thread these together and make a point. I have worked with students of all ages including university level. I help students develop a thesis, find resources, organize material, develop structure, edit/revise, and keep track of citations.

Special Needs

I work successfully with Special Needs students by providing concrete tools and constructive reinforcement. My approach is completely and totally positive. I work with a child's abilities and areas of strength. I harness their accomplishments to access new skills and learning. I have specialized training in Differentiated Education and use the Orton Gillingham multi-sensory approach to teach reading and writing. I am also trained to provide remedial math concepts and instruction to elementary grade students. With one-on-one attention, my students show immense promise and achievement.

Study Skills

I am a certified, experienced teacher with a Master’s Degree from The Hunter Graduate School of Education. In addition, I have pursued several post-masters specializations in order to provide differentiated instruction(1) in math(2), writing(3), and reading(4). I have taught children in pre-school through twelfth grade and currently teach writing to middle school students at The Wilson School (Morris County) in NJ. My family and I live in Englewood, NJ, a twenty minute drive from Manhattan.

I provide concurrent organizational and time management skills along with instruction in all subjects (K-6), writing (K-12) as well as SAT test preparation. Student instruction and organizational support may be a combination of modern and traditional methods. In addition, I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham Multi-Sensory approach to reading and writing. I have developed an elementary level reading comprehension program and prepared a lower school word study program complete with materials for my school. Furthermore, I am technologically adept, specifically with Apple applications that provide excellent structural and time saving devices. Many are extremely useful for students struggling with planning and coordination. Communication with child's teacher is also inclusive, as are all manipulative materials for use during meetings.

Being a teacher and a parent, I know critical it is to provide parent support as part of the tutoring session. Born in Peru to European parents, I understand and speak Spanish fluently. I arrived in the United States when I was seven, and I have been an American citizen for 46 years.

Aside from my many years of experience with different types of learners/students, my own children have been my best trainers. Fifteen years of nightly homework sessions as well as frequent teacher communication has taught me the most effective strategies to help my children succeed in school. My students and even my own sons respond to my advice and support because it makes their life easier.

Writing

Many students, as well as working men and women, need organizational and editing support once they begin to write an essay or a paper. They have ideas but need help laying out the structure, or they have disparate points to make but need an overall clarifying "umbrella" to thread these together and make a point. Much of this can be done using Google Docs, or by email/phone. I prepare for these exchanges outside of the tutoring sessions. In my experience, there is a great need for this kind of "coaching," although I have found that the additional time involved (reading the background material and mulling over the topic/thesis) is considerable. However, my student-families understand and are happy for the prep-time necessary to engage them in a solid constructive paper/essay-writing adventure.

This is how it would work for any form of written material, whether it is a letter or a research paper:
1. You tell me the goal(s) or what you want to convey in your letter, your essay, your article, or your paper
2. You write an initial draft without worrying about mistakes, organization, spelling... just write on Google.docs (I will guide you through the process of creating and sharing a document)
3. I help you tie it together by asking you questions after I read your initial draft. Your answers will help me formulate sentences that will tie your work together
4. I will make structural suggestions to make the text flow naturally and, if necessary, I will show you examples that you are free to use. Eventually you will know how to do this independently.
5. I will suggest word choices and grammar usage that efficiently gets your message across.
6. You use me as needed, project by project and, with time, you will know what to do and you will not need any help

I will teach you to write directly and effectively. Once you are comfortable with writing, you will develop your own style, and it will be good!
